We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The water is listed by Lymm Angling Club as “River Severn, Montford Bridge”, close to Montford Bridge and Shrewsbury.
- It sounds like a cracking mixed fishery, with coarse and game angling both covered. Chub, barbel, roach, perch and pike are named, alongside trout.
- The club says the stretch can produce double-figure barbel, so there’s plenty to get excited about when the river’s got a bit of colour and the fish are on the munch.
- Expect classic Severn water rather than a manic little drain. Think glides, crease water and steady flow, with conditions changing nicely through the seasons.
- Barbel and chub are the obvious river targets. A feeder or touch-ledger approach should suit deeper flow, while trotting is worth a go when the pace and depth are friendly.
- There’s also game-fishing interest, with trout named on the water. Salmon and grayling are mentioned by the club too, although they aren’t included as selectable species here.
- Access is from the B4380/Holyhead Road near Montford Bridge. Turn before the bridge towards Forton, then follow the final track down to the farm and riverside parking area.
- The riverside parking area only holds roughly three or four cars. If it’s full, drop tackle off first, then return vehicles to the paddock. Don’t block tractors or farm kit.
- It’s a working farm setting, so livestock gets right of way. Leave gates as signed, keep dogs at home, and make sure your club access or key arrangements are sorted before setting off.
Methods: Go prepared for a proper mixed-river session: feeder or ledger for barbel and chub, with trotting a bob-on option when the flow allows. Game anglers should follow the club’s current instructions for the trout and other named game species.
