STF Monkmoor

A proper varied River Severn stretch at Monkmoor, with well over a mile of right-bank fishing split into three cracking sections. Expect deep holes, salmon lies, fast shallows, bays, gutters and plenty of water to explore.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • Fishing is on the inside of the river loop, from the right-hand bank only. The stretch is divided into upper, middle and lower sections.
  • The upper end starts at the Gypsy Stones. It narrows through a shallow gorge, crosses fast-rippled bedrock and has productive pools and eddies.
  • There are deep holes and salmon lies up top, with Barbel, Chub and Salmon particularly highlighted in this section.
  • The Uffington middle section runs between two road bridges. It has slacker inside water, bays and overhanging branches on the far bank.
  • That middle water also brings deep holes, gutters, shingle beaches and shallow streamy runs. Many Barbel and notable Chub are reported here.
  • Below the second bridge, the lower section joins the Belvedere Wood fishery. It is mostly a fairly straight run with varied features.
  • Pike and Perch fishing is highlighted below the upper-section rapids and near the lower outlet. A cheeky change of approach could be bob on when those fish are on the munch.
  • The varied flow gives you options: trot the shallower streamy runs, work the crease around the eddies or use a feeder into the deeper holes and gutters.
  • The banks are high and can be dangerous when muddy or wet, so take care. Fishing only reaches the river’s centre line, and casting must stay inside it.
  • This is daytime fishing only. Leave before darkness, and remember there are no designated pegs where anglers must keep at least 10 metres apart.

Methods: Trotting, feeder work and fishing the creases around the pools, eddies, gutters and deeper holes should cover the main options. Keep things tight to your side of the river and look for Barbel, Chub, Pike and Perch in their noted areas.

Key rules

  • A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required before buying a permit.
  • A Shrewsbury Town Fisheries day or season permit is required before fishing.
  • All permits must be purchased online before fishing; none are sold on the bank.
  • Coarse fishing season: 16 June to 14 March.
  • Salmon fishing season: 1 February to 7 October.
  • The secure gate must be closed and locked after entry. Do not share the access code.
  • Do not fish within 10 metres of another angler where there is no designated peg.
  • Fishing is limited to the river’s centre line, and casts must not go beyond it.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
