The full rundown on Patshull Park Fishery
Patshull Park Fishery sits near Pattingham on the Shropshire–Staffordshire border, centred around the cracking Great Lake. It was built way back in 1768 and covers approximately 75 acres, so there’s plenty of water to get your head around.
Great Lake has a bit of everything. The northern shallows average about 10 feet and are said to fish well early in the coarse season. Down south, the Deeps drop beyond 20 feet and reportedly become more productive from around mid-August. Worth keeping that seasonal switch in mind when picking a swim.
The fish mix is broad too. Carp are reported over 30lb, with bream and tench into double figures. Roach and perch add a few bites, while pike are reported over 30lb, including an older reported fish of 32lb 8oz. It’s not just a carp puddle — there’s plenty to keep a mixed-species angler busy.
Fishing is available from the bank and, subject to the section and season, from boats or punts. The Boats section provides boat-based access to pegs. Competition angling and open matches are also held on Great Lake, which gives the place a proper match-fishing angle alongside the quieter day-ticket sessions.
Trout fishing is available seasonally, with rainbow and golden trout stocked to about 10lb and resident brown trout also reported. Pike fishing is advertised from 1 October to 31 March on the official estate page, although an older guide gives a slightly different season. Best bet is to check the current position before setting off.
For carp anglers, Great Lake carp fishing is through a syndicate rather than ordinary day tickets. Church Pool is another syndicate water: a separate, tree-lined pool of about 10 acres holding common and mirror carp reported over 30lb. Beginners are welcomed, and tuition packages, club bookings and corporate fishing can be arranged.
The Fishing Lodge is handy for tackle, bait, hot and cold snacks and drinks. Parking, a cafe, disabled toilets and wheelyboats are also reported. Current day-ticket prices aren’t published, so give the lodge a bell with the fishery before travelling. That’ll save a needless faff, especially if you’re after a particular section, boat or seasonal ticket.
We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.

How we'd fish Great Lake
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
