The full rundown on Bury Hill Fisheries

Bury Hill Fisheries is at The Boathouse, Old Bury Hill, Westcott, near Dorking, Surrey, tucked into a proper 200-year-old estate in the Surrey Hills. The current fishery has three angling lakes — Bonds, Milton and Temple — covering roughly 9 acres altogether. A tidy little choice if you fancy a few hours with the float gear, a day on the carp rods or a longer specimen session.

There’s one important bit to get your head around before packing the gear: this is now members-only, rather than ordinary walk-in day-ticket fishing. Every visit needs to be booked and paid for online, with telephone booking available if online faff isn’t your thing. Once booked, you’re issued an electronic gate passcode. Worth sorting all that before setting off, rather than turning up and hoping there’s a spare swim.

Day Members get access to both Bonds and Milton Lakes. They offer general and specimen coarse fishing, with carp, tench, crucian carp, roach, rudd and perch listed among the species. That gives you plenty of ways to approach the session. Pack a float setup for a bit of searching, some margin kit for a closer look and carp tackle if you’re after a proper lump. On a new water, it pays to spend a few minutes watching the swim, checking the margins and asking the bailiff where the fish have been showing before clipping up.

Temple Lake is the more specialised option, available to Specimen Carp Members and managed specifically for specimen carp fishing. The fishery advertises carp exceeding 40 lb, so this is the lake for anglers chasing a serious PB rather than simply having a mooch about for mixed species. Bring the usual specimen essentials, make sure your unhooking and retention kit is suitable, and get the current booking details clear before planning an overnighter. Night fishing is available through Specimen Carp Membership, subject to booking and the permitted session times.

Day Membership access is from 7:00am until 8:30pm, or dusk if earlier, and is available seven days a week subject to availability. Temple Lake’s published fishing window is 7:00am until 6:00pm or dusk if earlier. Secure parking, toilets and washing facilities are listed as membership benefits, which makes planning a full day a bit more straightforward. Non-fishing guests are allowed under the membership arrangements, but check the permitted numbers and charges when booking.

One final travel check: the directions warn there’s no access via Milton Street. The entrance is reached from the A25 via the Milton Heath car-park entrance, so follow that route rather than relying on the sat-nav to get clever. Old Bury Hill Lake is closed to angling under the current arrangement. Prices shown are labelled 2023/24, so confirm the latest charges before travelling, and make sure you’ve got a valid Environment Agency rod licence sorted.
