River Severn – Blackstone

Blackstone is BAA’s bit of typical middle Severn water in Worcestershire, with roughly 1,500 yards of left-bank fishing below Blackstone Rock. Published depths of 4–8 feet and a species list including barbel and chub give you plenty to think about before picking a swim.

The lowdown

  • There’s approximately 1,500 yards to go at here, all on the left bank below Blackstone Rock. That’s the stretch to keep in mind when planning your session — not the water above the rock.
  • BAA calls this typical middle Severn water, with published depths running from 4–8 feet. Treat that as the stretch’s range rather than a promise for every peg; finding the depth in your chosen swim is a sensible starting point.
  • The named fish are barbel, chub, roach, dace, pike and eels. A proper mixed list, so decide what you’re after before loading the tackle. There’s no need to turn a riverside session into a whole-car unloading exercise.
  • The boundaries need a bit of care. Fishing upstream of Blackstone Rock is strictly private, and so are the first two pegs immediately below it. Don’t mistake those first two swims for the start of your BAA fishing.
  • Head in through Blackstone Farm from the B4195, then follow the farm track and gate to the riverside meadows. The gate-lock code is on your membership card, so have it handy rather than buried under your kit.
  • Parking is alongside the fishing pegs — handy for keeping the carrying down. There’s an important catch, though: the access is unsuitable for Transit-type vans or anything larger. Sort the right vehicle before setting off.
  • This is members-only fishing, with no night fishing and no BAA day permits. Check the club’s booked-water information for competitions before making the trip, carry your card, and leave the access gate closed and locked. Simple stuff, but worth getting bob on.

Methods: With published depths of 4–8 feet, plumb your chosen swim before settling on a presentation. Trotting for the smaller listed fish or a feeder approach for barbel and chub are options to consider, rather than a claim that one method rules the stretch.
