River Severn – Winnall
The lowdown
- This is Lower Severn fishing, three miles below Stourport, with KDAA running the stretch. It’s members only, so get your membership sorted before heading down — there’s no cheeky day-ticket option at Winnall.
- The river has good flow coming from Lincombe weir upstream. That’s a useful bit of character to keep in mind when planning your session: moving water is part of the picture here.
- Published depths run from 6 to 12 feet over gravel. That gives you a decent depth range to think about, rather than treating every swim as though it’s the same bit of river.
- Twenty well-spaced pegs were restored during the 2015–16 work, and many received new platforms. The spacing is a handy part of the setup, though platforms weren’t fitted to every single peg.
- The restoration had funding from the Angling Trust and Environment Agency. It covered the fishing pegs and restored the original downstream car park — a proper investment in getting the stretch back into shape.
- There’s also a second car park at the upstream end. The published walking route crosses two small ditches, with the fishing stretching upstream from that access point. Worth remembering when packing your kit.
- KDAA names barbel, bream, roach, chub, perch, dace and pike for Winnall itself. That’s a cracking mix of river species, rather than a stretch described around just one target fish.
- Keep this one a daytime outing: night fishing is prohibited. Braid and fires are out too, and all litter must go home with you. No fish may be removed from the water.
Methods: Plan your approach around the published 6–12-foot depths, gravel bed and good flow from upstream. Keep braid out of the setup — it’s prohibited here.
