The full rundown on Sandhurst Lake
Sandhurst Lake is part of the Yateley complex and sits on a 14-acre gravel pit. It’s a proper specimen carp lake, with depths running from roughly 2ft to 10ft and an average depth of about 5ft. That gives you plenty to think about, rather than just chucking at a feature and hoping for the best.
There are gravel bars and other fish-holding features to pick apart, plus one island that can be fished to. The official homepage lists 31 swims, while the quick-facts section lists 28, so there’s a small difference in the published figures. Swims aren’t allocated beforehand either — it’s first come, first served.
The carp are the main draw. The fishery says there are more than 400 in the lake, averaging around 26lb, with fish over 40lb present. The published venue record is 50lb 3oz. Bream to 16lb-plus are also listed, with tench, roach and pike making up the other reported species.
This is aimed squarely at experienced carp anglers. You can fish through the night on the 23-hour ticket, with sessions starting at 10am and finishing at 9am the following day. A maximum of three rods is allowed, but all of them must be fished from the same swim.
The ticket setup is nicely straightforward, but there’s no turn-up-and-fish faff. Tickets have to be bought online in advance, and they aren’t sold on the bank. A two-rod 23-hour ticket costs £35, while three rods costs £40. Exclusive bookings are available by phone, but require a minimum of three nights.
On the bank, you’ll need a barrow because driving around the fishery isn’t allowed. There are car parks and portable toilets, while BBQs are permitted if used safely and cleaned up afterwards. No boats or bait boats are allowed, and rods must never be left unattended.
The rules are geared around fish care and controlled specimen angling. A 42-inch minimum landing net, suitable unhooking mat and carp-care kit are compulsory. Nets, mats and slings must be dry and disinfected in the arrival dip tank. With night fishing, island access and some serious carp on the books, this looks like a venue for anglers who enjoy doing things properly and hunting a proper lump.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Sandhurst Lake
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
