The full rundown on A12 Lakes

A12 Lakes, also listed as A12 Cuton Lakes, is a three-lake venue in Chelmsford, Essex, at CM2 6NX. The choice is nicely split: Specimen 1 for the biggest advertised carp, Specimen 2 for carp alongside tench and bream, and Canal Lake for mixed-coarse fishing and matches. That gives you a useful starting point before booking a swim. Pick the sort of session you fancy first, then check the conditions for that particular lake.

Specimen 1 is the bigger water at approximately 5.8 acres, with average depths of 5–8ft. The fishery advertises mirror, common and butterfly carp, including fish over 40lb. Proper PB territory for plenty of anglers, then, though a headline weight certainly isn't a promise of a bite. This lake needs an annual membership as well as your fishing ticket, and its seasonal minimum bookings make it more of a planned-session option than a cheeky last-minute few hours.

Specimen 2 covers 2.9 acres and also averages 5–8ft deep. Its advertised mirror and common carp run to 34lb, with tench and bream adding another dimension. There's no membership requirement here, which removes one bit of faff if you're comparing the two specimen waters. Don't confuse that with unrestricted short sessions, though: minimum booking lengths still apply, including longer bookings on summer weekends. Check the length you actually need before choosing your ticket.

Canal Lake takes things in a different direction. It measures 115m by 16m, has 11 swims and offers parking metres from the water. The advertised mix includes carp, tench, bream, perch and roach, so this is the obvious lake to look at if variety matters more than chasing the venue's biggest carp. Its narrow layout also makes it a very different proposition from the specimen lakes. Open matches and club or group match options are advertised too.

The venue opens all year and advertises both day and night fishing, but gate access isn't round the clock. Overnight anglers are locked in, and leaving after closing brings an extra charge. Canal overnighters depend on there being no match the following day. Booking is through Swimbooker or by telephone, and everyone must report to the cabin before setting up. Sorting those details beforehand should save an awkward arrival with a loaded barrow.

On the practical side, toilets, disabled access and a bait/tackle shop are listed, although the precise accessibility arrangements are worth checking for your needs. Bring genuinely barbless hooks: microbarbed and crushed-barb versions aren't allowed. Both specimen lakes require suitably sized nets and mats, with a head torch compulsory for night anglers. The appeal is that clear choice between specimen sessions and mixed-coarse fishing.
