The full rundown on Chigborough Farm & Fisheries

Chigborough Farm & Fisheries sits on Chigborough Road, near Maldon in Essex, within a 130-acre farm and leisure complex. That’s the whole site, mind, not the fishing acreage. For coarse anglers, the main choice is between May Water, Heybridge Mere and Scraley Mere. There are also two named fly-fishing lakes, Home Water and Rook Hall, so this isn’t just a case of turning up with the carp rods and ignoring everything else.

May Water is the biggest of the three named coarse waters at 14 acres, with over 35 swims. Its listed species are carp, Wels catfish, bream, tench and pike. That gives it a broad appeal, whether carp are your thing or you fancy targeting something different. No fish weights are supplied here, though, so don’t read the catfish listing as a promise of a particular-sized lump or a nailed-on PB.

Heybridge Mere brings things down to three acres and approximately 15 swims. Carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd, perch and pike are all listed, making it a proper mixed-coarse option on paper. Scraley Mere is four acres with approximately 12 swims, but the big distinction is access: weekday day tickets switch to whole-lake bookings at weekends. If you’re planning a group session, that’s the one to look at rather than assuming every lake works the same way.

There’s scope for more than a quick day on the bank. Coarse 24-hour tickets permit overnight fishing, and there’s a separate weekend ticket too. Book ahead through the website or Swimbooker app and arrive at your booked session time. Scraley’s exclusive weekend arrangement covers six anglers, with room for two additional anglers at an extra charge. Sort that detail before everyone loads the motor; it’s much less faff than untangling a group booking at the gate.

The practical bits look useful for a longer stay: toilets, a shower beside the fishery office and a trout-lake lodge that opens 24 hours. Black Pig Farm Cafe is onsite, while Ricky’s seasonal bait-and-tackle shop operates April–October on specified days. There’s no tackle hire, so bring your own kit. Camping, glamping and holiday accommodation are also available, giving non-fishing companions or anglers after a longer break another way to use the site.

Before you go, get the seasonal and tackle rules bob on. Pike fishing is October–March only, carp mainline must be at least 15lb with no braid, and clean, dry nets, mats and slings are required. Fly anglers should check the summer arrangements carefully: Home Water closes for fly fishing July–October, while Rook Hall’s August access needs confirmation. We haven’t fished here; the appeal is the choice of waters and sessions, not any promise that you’ll get bagged up.
