The lowdown
First things first: don’t load the car for Hanningfield just yet. As checked on 3 October 2026, the operator was still advertising fishing as temporarily suspended. The notice dated 26 August 2026 gives low water levels and an algal bloom as the reasons. That takes priority over the advertised season and booking options. The full rundown on Hanningfield Reservoir
Once fishing resumes, this is big-water angling rather than a cosy little pool job. Hanningfield Reservoir, near Chelmsford in Essex, covers approximately 870 acres. That’s the whole reservoir, though, not an invitation to fish every bit of it: fishing is restricted to the northern area marked by white boundary buoys. The advertised choices are the dam, natural banks and motorboats, giving you different ways to approach the water without treating the entire shoreline as fair game.
Stocked rainbow trout are the main draw, with brown trout, pike, perch and carp also reported. There’s no need to dress that up with promises of lumps or a guaranteed PB. The useful distinction is between the fish present and the methods allowed where you’re fishing. The current fishing page makes natural-bank fishing fly only until season-end, so don’t assume a spinning or predator permit lets you use those methods from every bank.
The boat option comes with a bit of planning, but nothing too faffy. Permits and boats are booked through Bookwhen, and advance boat booking is required. Published 2025 hire prices cover a maximum of two people, with fishing permits separate for the regular boat. An accessible boat is advertised too. Lifejackets must stay on throughout, and boat operating times are displayed in the fishing lodge. Those are the timings to check before heading out, rather than assuming the general fishing hours cover your boat session.
On the practical side, there’s parking, toilets, disabled access and a tackle shop stocking rods, reels, accessories, worms and bait. Picnic areas and a playground give the place more than just an angling angle. The café is currently advertised as temporarily closed for building works, but the fishing lodge offers drinks, snacks and ice creams during the closure. Handy for a brew and a bite, without banking on the café being open.
For the drive, use the fishery entrance on Giffords Lane and postcode CM3 8HX. Reservoir coordinates identify the water, not the entrance, so that small detail could save a needless detour. Keep the separate Environment Agency rod licence sorted, pack barbless hooks for catch-and-release and bring a landing net for trout. Before anything else, ring the fishery with the fishery for the suspension update; advertised answering hours are 09:00–16:00 daily.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Hanningfield Reservoir
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
trout
Fly fishing for the trout
Stocked lake trout cruise and feed up in the water, so you need to find the depth they're at. Start just under the surface and go deeper if nothing's happening.
- A 9ft 6–7 weight rod with a floating line covers most days; carry an intermediate or sinking line for cold or bright spells.
- Early season and cold days: lures like a Cat's Whisker, Blob or Damsel, pulled back in steady strips.
- Warmer days with fish rising: buzzers, Diawl Bachs or a dry fly fished slowly, or static under an indicator.
- Count your fly down (5, 10, 15 seconds) and change depth till you get a pull — then repeat that count.
- Use 6–8lb fluorocarbon tippet, and check the fishery's rules on catch-and-release, bag limits and barbless hooks before you start.
Venue rule: Bag limits and catch-and-release rules vary a lot on trout waters — ask at the lodge before your first cast.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.
