The full rundown on Thorney Weir Fishery

ThorneyWeir the Mets sits on Trout Lane, West Drayton, near Feltham and Greater London, right in the Colne Valley. It’s a sizeable complex made up of Thorney Weir lake, Mets lake and Lake 3, with fishing on the River Colne as well. The wider site is described as around 78 acres of countryside historically, so there’s plenty to get your head around before you even pick a swim.

Thorney Weir lake is the big one at approximately 20 acres. It has mature tree-lined banks, islands, sunken barges, plateaus, gravel bars and weed beds. There are bays and back areas too, which should suit anglers who fancy stalking or float fishing rather than simply clipping up and launching one into open water. Plenty of features to have a good look at before committing the rods.

Carp are the main draw here, with the fishery reporting fish over 40lb and at least 100 thirty-pound carp historically. Tench and bream are also listed, so there’s more going on than just a carp chuck-and-wait session. A sensible first move on a new water is to spend a bit of time watching the surface, checking the margins and looking for signs around islands, bars and weed before deciding where to settle.

Mets lake covers approximately 15 acres and has its own cracking mix of features, including islands, secluded bays, lilies, rushes and overhanging trees. The stated stock is around 550 carp, with a record common carp of 38lb 9oz. That sort of snaggy-looking, feature-packed layout should appeal to anglers who enjoy picking apart the margins and island lines. Bring the usual watercraft, keep the kit organised and ask the bailiff what areas have been producing before getting clipped up.

Lake 3 is included on the main 24-hour ticket, although its size, stock and named species aren’t published in the checked details. The River Colne adds another option, with barbel reported over 14lb, bream to 13lb, carp to 20lb and chub to 9lb, alongside roach, dace and minnows. River fishing will mean a different approach altogether, so take suitable tackle and check the current position with the fishery before heading for the bank.

The 24-hour ticket is £20 and covers two or three rods on Thorney, Mets and Lake 3. River-only tickets are £10 for one day or £15 for 24 hours, with the annual river-only ticket listed at £50. Tickets must be bought before fishing, from the machine at the Lizard Fisheries car park, about 100 yards farther along Trout Road. Published gate hours are 07:00-21:00, with the gates locked overnight; 24-hour tickets support night fishing, subject to that arrangement.

There are a few non-negotiables, so pack properly and avoid a daft faff on arrival. Barbless hooks are mandatory, minimum line strength is 15lb, and you need at least a 36-inch landing net plus an unhooking mat. Safe rigs may be checked by bailiffs, rods can’t be left unattended, and fish must be returned promptly. Nuts, plastic and foam imitation baits are prohibited, while particles must be properly prepared. Check the venue map, swim tours or tackle shop details before setting off, and contact the fishery with the fishery if you need to clarify anything.
