The full rundown on Broadlands Lake

Broadlands Lakes Coarse Fishery is on Hill Street, Calmore, Southampton, Hampshire, and it’s handy for the M27. This is a proper all-round venue, with three lakes plus river fishing. So whether you fancy a carp and specimen session, a match-style day or a bit of flowing water, there’s more than one way to get your rods bent.

The main attraction is Main Lake, also known as Broadlands Lake. At approximately 26 acres, it’s the big bit of water and holds a cracking mix of common carp, mirror carp, grass carp, pike, bream, roach, perch, tench, catfish and eels. The lake is fed by chalk streams connected with the River Test, giving the venue a real Hampshire feel.

The reported fish sizes certainly catch the eye. Carp are reported over 37lb, with mirror carp over 40lb listed elsewhere. Grass carp over 25lb, pike over 30lb, bream over 14lb and tench over 8lb are also reported. Catfish are listed at over 100lb and eels over 10lb. Those are reported maximums, mind, not a guarantee of what’s waiting in your swim, so sensible tackle and a chat with the fishery before fishing are both bob on.

Lower Lake gives you a more compact option at approximately 2.5 acres, with around 31 pegs. It contains carp to approximately 17lb, roach to approximately 2lb and eels. That could suit a shorter session or anyone who prefers a smaller water where you can spend time watching the margins, checking for signs and keeping the approach simple. Bring a couple of options, rather than every bit of kit in the garage, and ask which areas have been fishing well.

Match Lake is approximately 2 acres and has around 42 pegs. Carp, bream, tench, roach and perch are listed, making it a tidy choice for focused, match-style fishing. Keep your bait selection practical, stay mobile if the rules allow it and be prepared to adjust depth and presentation as the session unfolds. There’s also river fishing on the River Blackwater and a tributary associated with the River Test, while night fishing is available.

Facilities include parking, toilets, showers, a cafe and a tackle shop. Disabled access and lakeside parking or fishing platforms are also reported. Ticket prices and availability should be confirmed directly by telephone or email before travelling, as published listings conflict and the historic website was unavailable when checked. It’s worth asking about current tickets, river access, night-fishing arrangements, peg choice, bait rules and any tackle limits before loading the car. A tidy bit of planning saves a proper faff on arrival.
