The full rundown on Yateley Match Lake
Yateley Match Lake sits within Farnham Angling Society’s Yateley East Complex on Sandhurst Road, Yateley, Hampshire. The East Complex grid reference is SU 828 610, with access through the entrance on Sandhurst Road. It’s approximately 13.8 acres, so there’s a decent bit of water to get your head around rather than a tiny puddle where every swim is obvious straight away.
This is a mature, tree-lined gravel pit with three islands, giving it plenty to look at before you’ve even clipped up. Islands, margins and any visible signs of fish are the obvious starting points when you’re planning a first session. Take a proper walk if allowed before settling in, have a good look at the water, and don’t be afraid to ask the bailiff or the society which areas have been producing recently.
The headline draw is the carp and catfish angling. Carp are reported to around 39 lb, while catfish are reported to about 56 lb, so there’s some proper lump potential here. If you’re targeting the bigger residents, bring tackle you trust, check every knot and make sure your landing kit is up to the job. No need to overcomplicate things on a new venue either — start with a tidy, sensible approach and build from what the swim tells you.
There’s a good spread of other fish in the lake, too. Tench are reported to 7 lb or more, bream to about 10 lb or more, and perch to 3 lb or more. The fishery is described specifically around carp and catfish angling, but those extra species give you something else to think about if the bigger targets aren’t showing. Keep an eye on the margins, islands and any signs of fish moving, then adjust rather than stubbornly sticking to one spot.
Fishing is available on a season-ticket basis. Night fishing is allowed, bait boats are allowed and dogs are allowed, while boats are not allowed. There’s no separate Match Lake day-ticket price published, so membership enquiries are handled by Farnham Angling Society. Before travelling, it’s worth checking the current membership arrangements and asking about swims, bait limits, preferred rigs and any seasonal updates. That little bit of prep can save a proper faff at the gate.
The rules need sorting before you’re clipped up. There’s a two-rod limit, hooks size 14 and larger must be barbless, and bent or long-shanked hooks are not allowed. Keepnets must not be used for carp, pike, catfish or barbel. Access is approximately 200 metres beyond Weybridge Mead when travelling along Sandhurst Road. Verge parking on Sandhurst Road or Yateley Road is prohibited, traffic may approach quickly, and the gates must be locked and secured when leaving. Take care, stay organised and you’ll be bob on.
We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.

How we'd fish Match Lake
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On a big lake with gravel bars, a good bed of bait on or behind a bar gives roaming fish a reason to stop and feed for longer.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
catfish
Big hookbaits after dark for the cats
Catfish come out at night and like strong smells. A big halibut pellet or fish-based bait over a small bed of pellet is the usual approach.
- Fish strong — 20lb+ line and a big strong hook.
- Use an unhooking mat and a big net; cats are long and heavy.
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
