The full rundown on Stanstead Abbotts Lakes
Stanstead Abbotts Lakes is officially called Stanstead Innings, and it’s a proper permit-only setup rather than a turn-up-and-fish day-ticket water. Membership is capped at 60, with a waiting list currently running, so there’s a bit of admin before you’re clipping up. The fishery asks prospective anglers to email fisheries@aquamaintain.co.uk for the latest word on availability, pricing and the list. Worth sorting that first, rather than loading the motor and hoping for the best.
The headline water is Abbotts Lake, a 28-acre gravel pit with specimen carp on the menu. The biggest named fish is Chub Common, reported at over 50 lb. There’s plenty to get your eyes over too, with gravel bars, weed beds, shallow plateaus and island margins all listed as features. Fishing is from formal, numbered swims only, and three parking areas serve different sections. A sailing club is also present, so this isn’t a case of just firing baits anywhere that looks tasty.
A maximum of three rods is allowed on Abbotts Lake. With that sort of water and feature list, a sensible starting plan is to spend a good while looking before committing anything. Check the margins, plateaus and visible weed, then ask the bailiff or fishery contact what’s been producing and which areas are available. Bring enough kit to fish neatly from the designated swim, plus the usual feature-finding bits if you use them. Don’t assume a spot is free just because it looks quiet.
Banjo Lake offers a more compact option at approximately 3 acres. It’s long and narrow, with fishing from one bank, and holds around 150–200 carp from doubles to approximately 30 lb. There are also silver fish, tench and pike, with depths from roughly 2 ft to 10 ft. That range means it’s worth keeping the approach adaptable. A quiet margin or depth change could be the sort of thing to investigate before reaching for the biggest spread of bait.
Stock Pit covers approximately 2 acres and contains around 120 carp, ranging from 10 lb to 32 lb or more. Tench, pike, roach and rudd are also present, while depths run from approximately 3 ft to 14 ft. The boardwalk and platform swims give it a different feel again. Two rods are the maximum here, and on both Stock Pit and Banjo Lake you must fish from numbered swims only. Parking for the fishery is on Marsh Lane and Netherfield Lane, with designated areas to be used.
This is a rules-led venue, so have the right gear ready before setting up. Valid permits must be carried, unattended rods and lines are banned, and swimming and wading are strictly forbidden. Bring suitable landing and unhooking equipment, including a proprietary unhooking mat for specimen angling. Carp and pike may only be retained briefly in a suitable sling for photography or organisation; sacks and tunnels are prohibited. Boats, bait boats, drones, open fires and barbecues are also out. Follow Check, Clean, Dry, return fish as soon as circumstances allow, and check the latest position on pricing, opening, night fishing, closures and availability before planning the trip.
We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.

Is it suitable for disabled anglers?
We haven't seen disabled access listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Do I need a rod licence?
Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.
When's the best time of year to fish here?
Late spring through autumn is prime for most species. Check our live weather edge for this venue before you go — it updates daily.

How we'd fish Abbotts Lake
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
carp
Solid PVA bag over the snaggy bits
With the island margins and a busy bottom, a solid bag keeps the hook point masked on the drop and sat neatly in a little pile of bait however rough the lakebed is.
- Tie a short, stiff hooklink (4–6in) so it packs into the bag without kinking.
- Fill the bag with a damp crumb mix and pack it tight — loose bags spill on the cast.
- Nick a wafter or small pop-up on the hair so it settles over the mix, not under it.
- Cast a few yards short of the feature, recast every couple of hours with a fresh bag.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.

How we'd fish Banjo Lake
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.

tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.

How we'd fish Stock Pit
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Bait boats aren't allowed, so spod or throwing-stick the bait out — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.

tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Stanstead Innings is a permit-only syndicate water made up of Abbotts Lake, Banjo Lake and Stock Pit. There’s proper variety here, from specimen carp on a 28-acre gravel pit to tighter two-rod waters with carp, tench, pike and silver fish.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
