The full rundown on Elphicks Fisheries
Elphicks is entirely pre-booked — the fishery is explicit that you will be turned away if you haven't booked through its Swimbooker app, so this isn't a rock-up day-ticket venue.
The complex splits into two groups on price: North, Pullens and West End lakes are adults-only specimen waters with minimum tackle rules (42-inch net and mat, no sharing). Plantation and Prairie allow accompanied juniors with the same tackle rules. Kettles and Sandwich sit in the standard pricing tier.
It was rated the best fishery in Kent and 10th best in the UK by retailer Fishing Republic in 2023, based on ticket price, facilities and species range rather than a magazine opinion piece.

“Great fishery, well run, nice fish good cafe, toilets and a tackle shop”
— Google reviewer, 2026-03-09 · Public Google review listing
“Had a rough 24 hrs on prairie due to the weather but I have to say a special thank you to Gary and his wife on the lovely service from the cafe while I was there. Even though I didn't catch, a lovely homemade curry delivered to my swim in the freezing cold definitely took the edge off the bad weather!”
— Google reviewer, 2026-02-16 · Public Google review listing
“I don't usually leave reviews, but this was disappointing enough to mention. There are much better places to go fishing than this one.”

Elphicks Fisheries FAQs
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes, always, via the Swimbooker app — Elphicks does not sell day tickets from the lodge.
Which lake should a beginner try?
Prairie or Plantation are the easier, higher-action lakes; North, Pullens and West End are strictly for experienced specimen anglers.
Is it good value?
Fishing Republic rated it the top fishery in Kent and 10th in the UK in 2023, judged on price, facilities and species range.
Where's the nearest tackle shop?
There's lodge with bait and tackle for sale on site, so you can grab bits on the day. For anything bigger, stock up before you leave home — or order online in advance.
Do I need to bring food?
There's carp catchers café (on site) listed, but opening times vary, so pack snacks and plenty of water just in case — especially on a long session.
Are there toilets on site?
Yes — the fishery lists toilets, including disabled facilities.
Is there parking, and how close is it to the swims?
The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off. Bring a barrow in case it's a walk.
What's the postcode for the sat nav?
TN12 8EL. Spelmonden Road, Horsmonden — the fishery's own site shares the same TN12 8EL postcode as the main lodge entrance.

Can I just turn up, or do I need to book?

Can I bring my dog?
Not covered in the rules we've checked. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Are bait boats allowed?
We haven't seen a bait-boat rule listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Do I need barbless hooks?
Most UK fisheries prefer barbless or micro-barbed hooks — ask on arrival if unsure.
Do I need my own unhooking mat or cradle?
Bring one either way — most fisheries expect it and the fish deserve it.
Is it suitable for disabled anglers?
The fishery lists toilets, including disabled facilities. Ring ahead to check which swims suit you.
Do I need a rod licence?
Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.
When's the best time of year to fish here?
Late spring through autumn is prime for most species. Check our live weather edge for this venue before you go — it updates daily.

How we'd fish North Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
catfish
Big hookbaits after dark for the cats
Catfish come out at night and like strong smells. A big halibut pellet or fish-based bait over a small bed of pellet is the usual approach.
- Fish strong — 20lb+ line and a big strong hook.
- Use an unhooking mat and a big net; cats are long and heavy.
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.

How we'd fish Plantation Lake
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.

How we'd fish Prairie Lake
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

Tips & guides worth reading
How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
North Lake
Pullens Lake
West End Lake
Plantation Lake
Prairie Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
