The full rundown on Royal Military Canal – Hythe Stretch
Royal Military Canal – Hythe Stretch is proper Kent canal fishing, with the CPAS-controlled water running from Seabrook Outfall all the way to Warehorne Bridge. That’s over 13 miles of canal in total, so this is very much a venue for anglers who enjoy exploring, looking for a nice bit of water and not feeling boxed into one little lake. The Hythe-area municipal stretch from Seabrook Outfall to West Hythe Dam is approximately 7 km long.
There are around 200 maintained fishing swims along the wider municipal canal stretch, giving you plenty of choice for a day on the bank. Four single accessible fishing platforms are listed, including two at West Hythe disabled car park and two at Burmarsh Bridge. Scanlon’s Bridge also has a 35-metre fishing platform suitable for many anglers and wheelchair users. A small car park is available at West Hythe off West Hythe Road, with CT21 4NB listed as the nearest postcode.
The West Hythe to Giggers Green section runs for approximately four miles and is generally 8–10 feet deep. As with any unfamiliar canal, it pays to have a proper look before setting up. Check the margins, watch for depth changes and note any features you can spot before clipping up. The canal gives you room to work things out, so take a bit of time rather than lobbing in straight away and hoping for a cheeky bonus.
There’s a cracking mix of fish here, too. Recorded carp reach up to 33 lb, while pike reach up to 24 lb. Tench and bream are present to approximately 6 lb, with perch to around 2 lb 6 oz and roach to around 2 lb 4 oz. Skimmers, rudd, eels, gudgeon and occasional trout are also reported. The Seabrook to West Hythe section is stocked annually, and a brown trout weighing 5 lb 3.5 oz has been reported from the canal — a proper surprise if you’re fishing for the usual canal fare.
If pike are your thing, the Bomb Hole section at Giggers Green is known as a pike hotspot. For a general session, bring a versatile canal set-up and enough kit to adapt if the first swim doesn’t produce. A couple of bait options, spare rigs and sensible clothing for walking the bank are all worth having. If you’re unsure about the best area, ask the CPAS bailiff about the current form, designated swims and which section suits your target species.
The Royal Military Canal is a day-ticket water on eligible CPAS sections, with online tickets listed at £7 for adults and £3 for concession/junior anglers. On-the-bank tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for concession/junior anglers, bought from a CPAS bailiff with a CPAS bailiff card. The West Hythe Bridge to West Hythe Dam section is private and for CPAS members only. Carry your valid dated ticket or membership card, photo ID and an Environment Agency rod licence. There’s no closed season on CPAS-managed sections, but night fishing isn’t specifically confirmed and no daily opening or closing hours are published, so check before planning a late one.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Seabrook Outfall to West Hythe Dam
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

The reported mix includes carp, tench, bream, roach, pike, perch, rudd, eels and occasional trout. It’s a good fit for anglers who fancy changing approach rather than fishing the same line all day.

How we'd fish West Hythe to Giggers Green
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Bomb Hole, Giggers Green
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
rudd
Floating baits and shallow float for rudd
Rudd feed high in the water, often near reeds and lilies on warm days. Fish up in the water to them, not on the bottom.
- A light waggler set 1–2ft deep with a single maggot or caster on a size 18.
- Loose-feed little and often to bring them up.
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.

Tips & guides worth reading
How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
Seabrook Outfall to West Hythe Dam
West Hythe to Giggers Green
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.

- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
Bomb Hole, Giggers Green
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.

bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.

Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “A proper canal stretch with over 13 miles of CPAS-controlled water, solid mixed fish and some cracking targets. Day tickets cover eligible sections, but the West Hythe Bridge to West Hythe Dam stretch is members-only.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
