The full rundown on Lancaster Canal – Galgate Stretch
Lancaster Canal – Galgate Stretch is canal fishing rather than a little lake complex. The PAC Lancaster Canal Fishery controls water from the southern extremity near Preston right up to Bridge 118 at Hatlex Bridge, Hest Bank, with the Glasson Dock branch included. So there’s a fair bit of water to explore, not just one peg by Galgate.
The Galgate stretch sits on the main Lancaster Canal near Galgate, Lancashire. The nearby Galgate Waterside & Marina postcode is LA2 0LG, which is a useful marker when getting your bearings. The wider navigation runs for approximately 42 miles from Preston to Tewitfield, and this section is predominantly lock-free. Bob on for settling into a steady canal rhythm without loads of level changes getting in the way.
It’s managed as a general coarse fishery as well as a pike fishery. Reported species include roach, perch, bream, tench, carp and pike, giving you a decent spread of targets. For a tidy session, start by looking at the margins, any reed growth, cover and changes in depth. On a canal, keeping things quiet and accurate often matters more than piling bait in.
The £5 online day ticket covers fishing with up to two rods, but it has to be bought in advance. Memberships run for 12 months from the date of issue, and neither memberships nor day tickets are available on the bank. Pike anglers need PAC membership as well as a Lancaster Canal permit, while every angler needs the appropriate Environment Agency rod licence.
Day-ticket fishing is described as dawn until dusk, although the official rules permit night fishing throughout the fishery. There are no published seasonal opening or closing dates. Pike tactics have a defined window: live-baiting and dead-baiting are restricted to 1 October through 14 March, while lure and fly fishing have no closed season under the published rules.
The practical bits matter here. All fish must go straight back, live bait must be caught from the venue, and rods cannot be left unattended. An unhooking mat is required for larger species. Keep the towpath clear, take litter home, keep noise reasonable and remember this is shared canal space. A cracking, flexible stretch for anglers happy to read the water and fish within the rules.

How we'd fish Galgate Stretch
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
