The full rundown on Ashby Canal
This is the Ashby Canal stretch between bridges 40 and 44, running from Coton Bridge 40 through to Carlton Bridge 44. It’s a countryside canal venue rather than a lake complex, with Market Bosworth Marina sitting roughly in the middle of the stretch.
The marina itself is out of bounds for fishing, so keep your angling to the permitted canal water. Lay-by parking is available at bridges 40 and 44, but there’s very little parking along the rest of the stretch. Don’t use Market Bosworth Sports Club parking unless you’re there for an official Ashby Angling Club match.
The club reports mixed catches from match and pleasure sessions. Bream, bigger skimmers, roach, rudd and tench give you plenty of coarse options, while the stretch also holds larger canal carp. Perch and pike add a bit of predator sport when the rules allow it.
Ashby Angling Club says the stretch suits spinning and drop-shotting. Predator fishing is allowed from 1 October to 31 March, while lure tactics and deadbaits are banned from 1 April to 30 September. That gives the canal a nice seasonal split: coarse fishing through the warmer months, then a cheeky predator window in autumn and winter.
There’s no closed season on the club’s waters, although areas can be roped off while fish are spawning or closed for matches and work parties. The Canal and River Trust electrofishes the Ashby Canal during winter, partly to remove introduced zander, so always check the club’s latest notices before setting off.
This is ticket-controlled fishing, not a turn-up-and-fish job. The 2025/2026 adult ticket is £75, with senior tickets at £65 and junior tickets at £25. Premium or night-fishing tickets cost £230, but night access has extra conditions and may involve an application, vetting and a waiting list.
On the bank, keep it tidy and fish-safe. Unhooking mats are compulsory when targeting fish, catch-and-release applies to every species, and fixed feeders and fixed leads are banned. Dogs are allowed if well behaved, but fires, barbecues, radios and loud music are a no-go. A current Environment Agency rod licence is also required.

- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
Venue rule: Fixed leads are banned here, so use a lead clip set to drop the lead or an inline lead.

Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
