The full rundown on Leicester Line Canal
Right then, this one needs a tiny bit of untangling. Leicester Line Canal is the Leicester Section, also called the Leicester Arm, of the Grand Union Canal. It isn’t a separate commercial fishery with a little office, ticket hut and row of purpose-built lakes.
The line runs for roughly 41.2 miles, passing near Foxton and Market Harborough. The supplied location points to Foxton Locks, about three miles west of Market Harborough, so that’s the clearest starting point rather than pretending one postcode covers the whole navigation.
Foxton is the headline bit. You’ve got the famous ten-lock staircase, towpath access and plenty going on around the locks. The canal also connects with the Market Harborough Arm, which carries on to Union Wharf in town. That gives you a decent spread of canal water to explore, with pegs and conditions changing as you move.
Fish-wise, expect classic canal fare. Roach, perch and skimmer bream are reported locally, while tench can turn up on suitable stretches. Pike are possible too, especially once the colder months arrive. Depending on the section, there may also be chub, dace, barbel and larger bream in the mix.
This is a venue where the peg matters. Weed growth, water conditions, season and boat traffic can all change the game. A light float approach for roach and perch, fishing the far shelf or near cover, is the obvious starting point. When the weather warms, check the margins for tench and bream. In winter, pike become a more realistic target.
Access isn’t one simple blanket arrangement. Some stretches may be publicly fishable, while others can be controlled by an angling club. You’ll normally need an Environment Agency rod-fishing licence, and you must follow Canal & River Trust or controlling-club rules wherever they apply.
There’s no confirmed ordinary day-ticket setup or online booking system for the Leicester Line. Organised coaching and Canal & River Trust Lets Fish events are a different thing and need advance booking. Night fishing shouldn’t be assumed at Foxton or around Market Harborough without explicit permission. So, check the exact stretch before setting up, then enjoy a proper bit of canal wandering.
We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Leicester Line / Leicester Section
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Leicester Line Canal is the angling name used for the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal, running through the Foxton and Market Harborough area. It’s a proper canal venue rather than a stocked commercial lake, with roach, perch, skimmer bream and the chance of tench, pike and other canal species.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
