The full rundown on Shearsby Valley Lakes
Shearsby Valley Lakes sits on Saddington Road, Shearsby, near Lutterworth in Leicestershire, with LE17 6PX the postcode for your journey. There are four coarse lakes to choose from: Sunset, Hurricane, Tornado and Willow. The big attraction is the choice of fishing, rather than four lakes offering exactly the same thing. You’ve got a mixed-species option, carp and F1 waters, and both pleasure fishing and organised matches in the mix.
Sunset is the one to look at if you fancy variety over an all-out carp session. Its 13 pegs cover water with 18-inch margins, a 4–6-foot track and a submerged island sitting approximately 2 feet deep. That gives you some useful depth changes to think about when plumbing up. Bream, roach, ide, chub, perch, tench, crucian carp and barbel are listed, so there’s plenty here beyond the usual carp-and-F1 conversation.
Hurricane and Tornado each have 18 pegs, with depths reaching approximately 8 feet. Both list carp from approximately 1lb to nearly 20lb, plus F1s. That’s a different brief from Sunset: carp-focused fishing, with the chance of something considerably bigger than the smaller stock. Don’t confuse that upper size with a promise of a lump, though. The useful distinction is that these two waters offer the largest carp sizes listed across the four lakes.
Willow has 19 pegs and a mix of F1s, carp and silverfish. Its F1s average 1–3lb, while the carp average 2–5lb, with larger fish to 10–12lb. If you like the sound of mixed commercial-style fishing without making the biggest carp your whole mission, this is worth a look. Pick your lake around what you enjoy catching, then use the stated depths and stock to shape your approach rather than arriving with one fixed plan.
The day-ticket arrangement is straightforward: pleasure anglers pay on arrival, with places first come first served. Everyone must report to the tackle shop before heading towards the pegs, so make that your first stop rather than unloading straight into a swim. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday open matches are listed, and clubs can book whole lakes. For an organised outing, remember that those lake bookings carry a 50% non-refundable deposit.
A little preparation will save some faff. Bring barbless hooks no larger than size 10, leave braid and floating baits at home, and sort your pellets around the fishery’s requirements. Pleasure anglers cannot use keepnets, and you’ll need a net and unhooking mat for fish care. The venue opens all year but closes on Mondays. Evening closing changes seasonally, so check before planning a late finish; this isn’t an advertised night-fishing option.

- Species
- bream, roach, chub, perch, tench, crucian, barbel
Sunset offers 13 pegs and a cracking spread of species, including tench, crucians and barbel alongside bream, roach, ide, chub and perch. It’s the obvious lake to consider if a varied catch is your thing.
The margins are 18 inches deep, the track runs 4–6 feet, and a submerged island is approximately 2 feet deep. Take time plumbing up: those changes give you distinct depths to work with rather than treating the swim as one uniform patch.
Stocks bream, roach, ide, chub, perch, tench, crucian carp and barbel.

How we'd fish Sunset
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.

- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.

A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.

- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.

Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.

A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Shearsby Valley Lakes has four coarse lakes, with mixed-species fishing on Sunset and carp-and-F1 options on Hurricane, Tornado and Willow. There’s a proper pleasure-and-match setup here, with pay-on-arrival day tickets and whole-lake club bookings.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
