Neath Canal

The Neath Canal offers a proper mixed-species canal prospect, with carp, tench, silvers and predators listed. The big bit to sort before tackling up is permission: the former club lease has lapsed, and fishing rights across the canal aren’t confirmed.

“5.1/10 — The listed species mix is appealing, but fish sizes, abundance and section-by-section fishing prospects aren’t established.”

The lowdown

The Neath Canal is canal fishing, plain and simple — not a lake complex with a ticket hut and numbered waters. It runs through Neath town centre, along a route extending from Briton Ferry towards Glynneath. The council puts the whole canal at 13 miles, but don’t mistake that for 13 miles of confirmed fishing access.

The full rundown on Neath Canal

The Neath Canal is canal fishing, plain and simple — not a lake complex with a ticket hut and numbered waters. It runs through Neath town centre, along a route extending from Briton Ferry towards Glynneath. The council puts the whole canal at 13 miles, but don’t mistake that for 13 miles of confirmed fishing access. The waterway’s length and the stretch you’re actually allowed to fish are two different things.

There’s a cracking spread of species on the Fishing in Wales listing: carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd, perch and eels, plus pike, a few chub and occasional trout. That gives mixed-species anglers plenty to be interested in. It doesn’t tell you which pound holds what, though, or how big the fish run. Think variety rather than promises of lumps, easy bags or a nailed-on PB.

The permission picture needs a little untangling before you load the barrow. Skewen Angling Club formerly leased the canal, but Fishing in Wales says that lease hasn’t been renewed for several years. Its update tentatively suggests no fishing charge on the listed stretch and says a rod licence is believed to be sufficient. That isn’t owner-confirmed permission, and it certainly isn’t a green light for the entire canal. Check your intended stretch first.

For that check, the management split is useful. The Canals Trust identifies the Neath Canal Navigation Company as the owner and lists it as managing the canal south of Resolven. North of Resolven, it lists Neath Port Talbot Council as the manager. The Trust itself explicitly says it isn’t responsible for canal management or condition. Going to the relevant manager with the exact spot you have in mind should cut out some faff.

This is shared towpath territory, too. National Cycle Route 47 follows the Neath Canal towpath, and the council promotes a canal walk between Aberdulais and Resolven. Keep that in mind when thinking about your kit and where to settle down; don’t assume the bank is an angler-only space. Dedicated angler parking, toilets, tackle sales and accessible fishing platforms aren’t confirmed. The Riverside Drive coordinates mark the canal, not a staffed entrance.

Finally, keep the Neath and Tennant names straight: they’re separate canals, linked at Aberdulais. A listing covering both doesn’t settle access everywhere on either one. There’s no confirmed fishing timetable, night-fishing permission, venue-specific season or current bait, hook and rod-limit guidance here. Get those details bob on with the relevant manager before choosing your session. The appeal is the mixed canal fishing; the practical homework is making sure your chosen bit is open to you.

We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Neath Canal FAQs

Is fishing on the Neath Canal free?

Fishing in Wales tentatively reports no charge for its listed stretch, but owner confirmation isn’t available. Don’t treat that as confirmed free fishing across the canal.

Does Skewen Angling Club still lease the canal?

Fishing in Wales says the club formerly leased it but hasn’t renewed that lease for several years.

Are the Neath and Tennant the same canal?

No — they’re separate, linked canals. They connect at Aberdulais.

Are there toilets and angler parking?

Dedicated angler parking and toilets aren’t verified. Neither are tackle sales or accessible fishing platforms, and the Riverside Drive coordinates don’t mark a staffed fishery entrance.

Where's the nearest tackle shop?

We haven't found a tackle shop on site at Neath Canal. Sort your bait and end tackle before you travel, as there's no guarantee of anything close by near Neath.

Do I need to bring food?

We haven't seen any food on site, so bring your own grub and drinks. A flask and a stove (where allowed) make a long day much better.

Is there parking, and how close is it to the swims?

The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off. Bring a barrow in case it's a walk.

What's the postcode for the sat nav?

SA11 3NE. Heads up: we couldn't confirm this fishery's own postcode, so SA11 3NE is the nearest one to the fishery's map position. It should get you close, but it might be a little off — check the fishery's directions before you set off.

How much is a ticket?

Do I need my own unhooking mat or cradle?

Is it suitable for disabled anglers?

We haven't seen disabled access listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.

Do I need a rod licence?

Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.
