The full rundown on Rollesby Broad

Rollesby Broad sits in the Trinity Broads network near Rollesby, Norfolk, with the address generally given as Main Road, Rollesby, NR29 5EF. It’s linked with Filby Broad and Ormesby Broad, and covers roughly 77 hectares. So yes, there’s plenty of water to get your head around. The Trinity Broads also include Lily Broad and Ormesby Little Broad, making this a proper Broadland setting rather than a tiny puddle venue.

The broad is isolated from the main navigable Broads network, and motorised pleasure craft aren’t permitted on the water. That should help keep things a bit more settled while you’re fishing. Most angling is done from small rowing boats, with two boat stations reported, including one by the bridge. A small two-person rowing boat suitable for fishing has also been reported at the site, but boat availability needs checking before you travel.

Bank fishing is more limited. You can’t just wander round and drop into any likely-looking margin, as fishing is restricted to designated platforms. Platforms are available at Rollesby Bridge, with some suitable for wheelchair users. If you’re planning a platform session, it’s worth checking which pegs are available, whether you need to book and exactly where you’re allowed to fish. Saves a proper faff on arrival.

The fish mix is a cracking Broadland spread. Bream, roach, silver bream, perch, rudd and tench are reported, along with pike and eel. Carp are also reported in a fair variety of forms, including common, crucian, mirror, leather, ghost, grass and koi carp. Other reported fish include bleak, gudgeon, dace, chub, barbel, bullhead and bitterling, so there’s plenty to keep an angler interested.

Tackle-wise, a flexible approach looks the sensible one. A float setup or light feeder gear gives you options for roach, rudd, perch, silver bream and bream, while the margins and reed edges are worth keeping an eye on for tench and other close-in visitors. Pack suitable kit for pike as well if that’s your target. On a new water, take a few options, watch what’s happening in the swim and ask the operator about productive areas, bait limits and any local wrinkles before clipping up.

The Waterside Rollesby provides free on-site parking, with toilets and refreshments nearby. Its current website says rowing-dinghy hire is unavailable because of low water, while its seasonal guided boat tours are sightseeing trips rather than a confirmed fishing-ticket service. Fishing permission, boat availability and current rules should all be confirmed before travelling. You’ll need a valid Environment Agency rod licence, and local water-company bylaws include lead-weight restrictions. The coarse-fishing season is generally 16 June to 14 March, with the closed season generally running from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Handle every fish carefully and return it unharmed unless legally permitted otherwise.
