The full rundown on Selby Three Lakes
Selby Three Lakes sits on Bawtry Road, Selby, North Yorkshire, and is also commonly listed as Selby 3 Lakes Complex. The main day-ticket water is a cracking former pit of roughly 4 acres, with a big dividing spit breaking the lake up nicely. It’s the sort of place where you can have a proper go at carp, or keep things a bit more mobile on a shorter coarse session.
There’s plenty for an angler to pick apart. Islands, lily pads, bars, overhangs and natural margins all create likely-looking spots, while the reported depths run from about 3ft down to 18ft. Add in gravel and sand bars, plus areas of silt, and there’s enough variation to make a quick look round well worth doing before you lob anything in. Find the features, watch the water and don’t just chuck at the nearest bit of cover.
Carp are reported to around 30lb, with eight overnight carp pegs available for anglers wanting to settle in properly. There are also individual coarse-fishing pegs, so the venue has a useful bit of flexibility. You can plan a longer carp session, or travel lighter and fish a shorter session around the margins, islands and other obvious features. A solid starting point is to keep the first cast sensible, then adjust once you’ve seen how the swim is laid out.
Carp and/or pike anglers can use up to three rods, but fishing is restricted to the designated pegs. Pike fishing is unavailable from 15 March to 1 October each year, so check the calendar before making plans. Night fishing is available by advance booking, and both night and 24-hour sessions must be pre-booked by telephone with the fishery. Under-14s must be accompanied by an adult when night fishing.
The tackle rules are worth sorting before you leave home. Carp and pike anglers need an unhooking mat and a 42-inch landing net. Pike anglers also need wire traces and forceps, along with the specified minimum-strength main line or braid. Bait boats, unattended rods, fires and loud radios are prohibited, while keep nets are banned except during authorised matches. All fish must be returned to the water, so have the right handling kit ready and keep everything calm and tidy.
There’s a portaloo in the car park, and Saltiz Snacks catering van is reported to serve hot and cold food and drinks Monday to Saturday, 7:30am-2:00pm. For a new venue, it’s still worth having a quick word with the bailiff before setting up: check which pegs are available, confirm the day’s arrangements and ask what areas have been producing. Get your mat and net out first, keep the approach neat and you’ll be bob on.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Day-ticket lake
carp
Solid PVA bag over the snaggy bits
With the lily beds and a busy bottom, a solid bag keeps the hook point masked on the drop and sat neatly in a little pile of bait however rough the lakebed is.
- Tie a short, stiff hooklink (4–6in) so it packs into the bag without kinking.
- Fill the bag with a damp crumb mix and pack it tight — loose bags spill on the cast.
- Nick a wafter or small pop-up on the hair so it settles over the mix, not under it.
- Cast a few yards short of the feature, recast every couple of hours with a fresh bag.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
