The full rundown on Grand Union Canal – Northampton Stretch
Northampton Nene Angling Club manages this sizeable bit of Grand Union Canal water, with fishing across the main line, Northampton Arm and Leicester Arm. It is a roving canal venue rather than a single lake, so expect plenty of towpath walking, bridge access and changing pegs.
The Northampton Arm is the headline stretch. It runs for approximately 4.8 miles from Gayton Marina to South Bridge in Northampton, where it joins the River Nene. South Bridge access is via Old Towcester Road near the Carlsberg Social Club, while other entry points are generally found at road-crossing bridges.
There is no designated fishery car park on the Northampton Arm. Parking needs a bit of common sense near road bridges, verges and lay-bys where permitted. Upton Way and the A45 are awkward, though, and roadside grass-verge parking is prohibited. No need to create a cheeky parking drama before you've even clipped up.
The reported fish mix is nicely canal-like: bream, carp, gudgeon, perch, pike, roach and tench. That gives you options through the seasons. Roach, perch and gudgeon suit a busy light-tackle session, while bream, tench and carp offer more substantial targets when conditions line up. Pike add another winter angle.
The main-line club water runs from Dodford to Castlethorpe, between Bridge 22 near the A5 and Bridge 64 near Castlethorpe. Another section runs from Norton Junction to Braunston, between Bridge 10 and Bridges 93/94. The checked details also name the Leicester Arm, making this a broad network rather than a one-swim venue.
The club lists the canal waters as open all year, with no closed season on the Northampton Arm. Day-ticket fishing is from dawn until dusk only, and night fishing is not permitted on a day ticket. One rod per angler is allowed under the canal-specific rules, and fishing is restricted to marked pegs where marked pegs are provided.
A £6 day membership is listed for the 2026/27 season, running from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027. Booking through the club shop is required before fishing, and a valid Environment Agency rod licence is also needed. Keep it tidy, fish within the rules and this looks like a flexible canal session with plenty of water to explore.

- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.

How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
Northampton Arm — Gayton Marina to South Bridge
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “A proper spread of club-controlled Grand Union Canal water around Northampton, covering the Northampton Arm plus main-line sections from Dodford to Castlethorpe and Norton Junction to Braunston. Day tickets are available, but booking, a rod licence and a close eye on the canal rules are all part of the deal.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
