Becketts Park

Becketts Park is a proper town-centre River Nene stretch, run by Northampton Nene Angling Club. It fishes from the left bank only, starting at the blue bridge by the marina entrance and running downstream to Nunn Mills Road bridge.

The lowdown

  • This is an urban river swim with parkland alongside it, so you get a town-centre setting rather than a tucked-away rural bit of Nene.
  • Fishing is from the left bank only. The club describes a footpath running along the whole stretch, making the water easy to walk and look at.
  • The upstream end is the blue bridge at the marina entrance. The downstream boundary is Nunn Mills Road bridge. Nice clear markers, bob on.
  • Access is mainly through Midsummer Meadow Pay & Display car park. The club names the Midsummer Meadow car park on Nunn Mills Road as the closest parking.
  • The named fish are roach, chub, perch, bream, dace and carp. A decent mixed bag of classic river species, with options for both silverfish and bigger fish.
  • Day membership is available for this water at £6 per person per session. It covers the River Nene town-centre sections only, and fishing is from dawn to dusk.
  • There’s no night fishing here, so this one is a daylight session. The closed season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, so check the dates before setting off.
  • The stretch has a continuous riverside walking path and sits beside Becketts Park. Keep an eye on the footpath and expect a proper public, town-centre atmosphere.
  • The club rules allow a maximum of two rods where the fishery rules allow. Fishing from boats or kayaks is prohibited, and fish must not be removed from the fishery.

Methods: It’s a mixed-species town-centre river, so trotting, float fishing and feeder approaches are the obvious starting points where the swim and rules allow. Keep it tidy, stay mobile along the footpath and fish within the club’s two-rod limit.
