Girton — tidal River Trent

Girton gives Full and Associate Members roughly 600 metres of tidal Trent fishing, with about 30 pegs to go at. Newark and District Piscatorial Federation shares the fishery with Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers, with barbel and bream named as the expected species.

The lowdown

  • This is tidal Trent fishing, so keep that tidal setting in mind when planning your session. The stretch is shared by Newark and District Piscatorial Federation and Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers, rather than being a Federation-only fishery.
  • There’s approximately 600 metres of fishing and around 30 pegs. Both figures are approximate, so take them as a handy guide to the size of the stretch, not an exact peg-by-peg layout.
  • The start of the fishing needs a little care: it begins about 100 metres downstream from the fence on the left at the access. Don’t treat the access point itself as the first swim.
  • Head in via Trent Lane, Girton. The Federation gives grid reference SK 81593 66810, which is a useful detail to have ready before you set off and saves a bit of arrival faff.
  • Barbel and bream are the fish the holder tells you to expect here. That’s a steer for planning your fishing, not a claim about confirmed catches, fish sizes or which pegs are producing.
  • Access is gated, and the Federation secretary is the person to contact for the code. Sort that before heading down with your kit; a members-only stretch still needs the gate arrangements bob on.
  • Keep vehicles off the grass altogether: neither driving nor parking on it is allowed. The two organisations’ gate locks must also stay connected so either organisation can unlock the access.
  • Fancy staying into darkness? Night fishing is controlled by Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers. The £30 notice concerns renewals from 2022/23, so check current availability and price rather than budgeting from that older figure.

Methods: Barbel and bream are the named targets for planning your approach on this tidal stretch. There’s no specified method or peg-by-peg swim guidance to single out a particular tactic.

  • Do not park or drive on the grass.
  • Keep the two organisations’ gate locks connected so either can unlock access.

  • The Federation’s river close season runs from 15 March–15 June inclusive.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
