Winthorpe — River Trent (Newark and District Piscatorial Federation)
Winthorpe is Newark and District Piscatorial Federation’s 32-peg stretch on the non-tidal Trent, popular with anglers after carp and barbel. Night fishing and parking behind every peg make it a handy option for a longer session, but there are no public day tickets.

Winthorpe — River Trent (Newark and District Piscatorial Federation)
The lowdown
- This is the non-tidal River Trent at Winthorpe, with 32 pegs under Newark and District Piscatorial Federation. It’s a members-and-guests stretch, so sort your access before loading the motor rather than expecting to pay on the bank.
- Carp and barbel are the fish the Federation names here, and it describes Winthorpe as popular with anglers targeting them. That’s the clear steer for anyone weighing up this stretch for a specimen session.
- The way in is via Holme Lane, opposite the Lord Nelson pub. Once you’ve crossed the railway, turn immediately left for the downstream end. Peg 75 is straight ahead at that entrance — a useful marker.
- You can drive along the riverbank and park behind every peg. That’s a proper handy arrangement when you’ve got a bivvy, unhooking mat and the rest of the kit to get to your swim.
- There’s another car park beneath the A1 road bridge at the upstream end. Keep that separate from the Holme Lane entrance in your planning: one marks the upstream parking option, the other brings you in downstream.
- Night fishing is allowed, and guests have a 24-hour Winthorpe ticket option. Longer stays are capped at five days and four nights, followed by a week without an overnight return. Not a pitch you can keep rolling over.
- Watch the calendar before getting carried away. The river close season runs from 15 March through 15 June, and Winthorpe guest tickets aren’t available before 1 July. Those are two separate dates to bear in mind.
- Guest access needs a bit of organising, not a last-minute bank-side purchase. Each sponsoring member can bring one fishing guest, who must stay accompanied. Get the receipt details bob on: guest, sponsor and sponsor’s membership number.
Methods: Carp and barbel are the named targets here, so keep those in mind when planning your session. Specimen anglers must bring an unhooking mat, and there’s a two-rod maximum with no rods left unattended.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
