We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper river fishing rather than a tidy, uniform canal-style job. The Severn twists and turns through an unspoilt uplands setting, so expect plenty of character.
  • The water includes both pools and rapids. That gives you a fair bit to go at, from steadier swims to quicker, more lively water.
  • Coarse anglers have chub, dace, pike, barbel and grayling named for the fishery. BAA also describes the water as suitable for salmon and trout.
  • There’s no stated total length or peg count, so it’s best approached as roaming river fishing rather than a numbered-peg session.
  • In the pools, look to work the steadier water. The rapids and creases offer a change of pace, with the flow doing much of the legwork for you.
  • Trotting and feeder fishing are the obvious coarse approaches here, while the varied water means it’s worth moving about until you find a swim with a bit of life.
  • The twists and turns should give you plenty of changing flow to read. Keep an eye on the crease where faster water meets the slack — always worth a cheeky look.
  • Maesydd access is from the A483 turn-off, with a BAA car park. The postcode given is SY21 9LE.
  • Rhyddesgyn is reached by taking the next right after continuing past Maesydd. There’s a BAA car park there too, with the upstream and downstream car parks listed as SY21 9LD.
  • Night fishing is prohibited, and all gates must be kept closed. The gate code is provided on your BAA membership card, so don’t leave it at home.

Methods: For the coarse side, trotting through the glides and working a feeder into steadier water should cover plenty of ground. Read the pools, rapids and creases, then move on if a swim’s gone quiet.
