The full rundown on Apley Estate Fishing Lakes
Quick heads-up: Apley Estate is proper river fishing, not a complex of stillwater lakes with numbered pegs and carp puddles. The venue sits on the left bank of the River Severn, north of Bridgnorth in Shropshire, with the fishing running alongside the A442. If you fancy a bit of wandering, reading the water and finding what’s happening on the day, it’s a cracking sort of stretch to have on the list.
The fishable section is approximately half a mile long. The upstream limit is near the A442 car park entrance, while the downstream end runs to around the Severn Meadows public-car-park area. That gives you a decent length of bank to explore, so don’t automatically plonk yourself in the first swim you see. Have a look at the pace, depth, crease and quieter edges first, then pick a spot that matches the way you want to fish.
Barbel, roach, perch and chub are reported from the stretch. That gives you a few different ways to approach it. You might arrive with stronger tackle and suitable bait in mind for barbel, or keep things lighter when targeting roach, perch or chub. On a new river, bring a sensible spread of kit rather than trying to cover every possible method. A couple of rods, a landing net, leads or feeders, and enough bait options to adapt should save a fair bit of faff.
This is BAA membership water, and there are no day tickets for the Apley Estate stretch. Full adult annual membership for ages 17–64 is £50, senior membership for age 65 and over is £40, junior membership for ages 13–16 is £15, and family membership is £100 for a couple plus two children under 17. Infants under 13 fish free under the listed membership categories. Membership runs from 1 January to 31 December, and it can be obtained online through Birmingham Anglers Association or by post from BAA Ltd.
For the upstream end, travel from Bridgnorth on the A442 towards Telford. The upstream car park is listed at approximately 52.554168, -2.404876, postcode WV15 5JP. Field-entrance parking is also available, but vehicles must be parked well to one side so farm machinery can pass. Do not drive across the fields. Downstream, public parking is available near Severn Meadows, postcode WV15 5AF. If access via the old railway line would help with impaired mobility, that may be possible by prior arrangement with the Estate Office.
There are no stated daily opening times or seasonal opening dates on the fishery pages, so it’s worth checking the current position before travelling. Night fishing is not permitted at Apley Estate, and the £10 BAA night permit specifically excludes this venue. Bring your membership details, sensible river gear and clothing for a proper bank-side wander. Before setting off, it’s also bob on to confirm access, parking and any current local arrangements with BAA with the fishery or baajnw@btinternet.com.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Main water
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
