River Severn – Rossall

Rossall is a peaceful, rural River Severn stretch near Bicton, west of Shrewsbury, run by Lymm Angling Club. It’s a proper specimen-minded bit of water, with chub, pike and barbel in the mix — and the chance of a double-figure barbel.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is field-backed Severn water in quiet estate surroundings. A tranquil setting, with not much here to disturb the fishing.
  • The club calls Rossall a firm favourite with chub, pike and barbel anglers. So there’s a decent spread of options, depending on what mood the river’s in.
  • Barbel are the big draw for many anglers, and Lymm specifically mentions the possibility of double-figure fish. Proper Severn stuff.
  • Chub are well worth targeting too. Club catch reports include Rossall chub, with many caught after dark, so the stretch has clearly seen successful night fishing.
  • It’s identified as specimen-oriented water. Think steady observation, finding the better features and making the most of conditions rather than charging about.
  • For barbel, a feeder approach is the obvious starting point when the river has a bit of colour and the flow is pushing. Keep things tidy and fish the crease or any steadier edge.
  • Chub suit a quieter approach. Trotting or presenting a bait around glides and the crease can be worth a look, especially when the river is carrying a touch of colour.
  • Pike are also specifically named for the stretch. They give you another option when the conditions or season make predator fishing the better shout.
  • There’s no published peg count or exact bank length, so expect a natural stretch rather than a numbered, manicured run of pegs. The access is through fields after the estate track.
  • Getting in involves Montford Bridge, the Four Crosses Public House, Isle Lane and the estate track. Park beside the large tree opposite the old brick wall, then use the small and larger gates. No key is required.

Methods: Barbel feeder fishing, chub trotting or legering, and pike fishing are the main options named for this specimen-oriented Severn stretch. After-dark chub fishing has also been used successfully by club members.
