The full rundown on Shrewsbury Angling Club Waters

Shrewsbury Angling Club controls several River Severn stretches around Shrewsbury, along with Lords Pool, a separate stillwater south of town. It’s a club-water setup rather than a day-ticket venue, with membership required before you can get a line in.

The river sections include Albrighton, Preston Boats, Shelton, Pimley Manor, Pimley Rough and The Royce. The club website doesn’t publish lengths or acreage, so there’s no faff-free way to compare the stretches by size. What is clear is that the waters offer a good spread of classic Severn species and varied river features.

Pimley Manor looks the standout stretch for barbel anglers, with fish into double figures. There are also large chub, occasionally over 6 lb and into 7 lb, which is a cracking target on suitable tactics. Below the Pimley Manor island, pike and perch can be productive, while bream gather in the big slack above the island.

The shallows above the Pimley Manor island also produce salmon. That makes the stretch interesting from a fish-spotting point of view, although river fishing follows the legal close season from March 15 through June 16 inclusive. Pimley Manor has two car parks, and up to five nights are allowed there.

The Royce sits immediately upstream of the Pimley stretch and includes deeper water around Telford Way bridge. It holds barbel, chub and bream, giving you a few different ways to approach the river depending on conditions, water colour and what’s showing in the swim. There’s scope for a proper roving session or a more settled wait for a lump.

Lords Pool is the stillwater option. It contains common, mirror, ghost and koi carp into double figures, plus tench, bream, roach, rudd and perch. Fishing is from marked pegs only, with a maximum of two rods, and the pool is limited to 10 anglers except during organised matches and events.

Membership for 2026/27 is £35, with membership running for 12 months from June 16. Places are limited, with the club website stating a limit of 275 members in the membership process. Lords Pool is open from 7am until dusk, but must be pre-booked with the club secretary. Night fishing is not allowed there, while all club river sections allow night fishing, subject to the specific Pimley Manor limit.
