The full rundown on Shropshire Union Canal – Whitchurch Stretch
The Whitchurch Stretch is a cracking run of the Llangollen Canal, often talked about locally as part of the Shropshire Union Canal system. It covers roughly nine miles, starting at Bridge 25 at Quoisley and running through Norbury and Grindley Brook to Bridge 33 beyond Whitchurch.
This is canal fishing as it should be: mobile, feature-focused and all about reading the water. Look for cover, boat-shadowed edges and any quieter-looking bits of towpath. The stretch is considered particularly good when boat traffic eases off, so quieter periods are well worth targeting.
The fish list is nicely mixed. Roach, bream, perch and tench are known from the section, with pike also present and common carp reported. That gives you plenty to have a go at, whether you fancy a roachy session, a few bream or a cheeky predator line.
Access comes through Lymm Angling Club and its affiliations. Port Sunlight Angling Club members may fish through the PSAC-Lymm arrangement, while Liverpool and District Angling Association members may also have access through affiliation arrangements. Membership is another route, with Lymm’s 2026 canals-only membership listed at £36.30 for a new membership or renewal.
For a day session, the Lymm Angling Club canal ticket is £2.50 and covers the Shropshire Union Canal, with up to two baited rods allowed. The ticket has to be bought before fishing through the club website. There’s no money taken on the bank, so get the admin sorted before you head off and avoid a last-minute faff.
Fishing is from dawn until dusk all year round, with no night fishing under the canal day-ticket rules. You must fish from the towpath side, use recognised access points and the towpath for entry and exit, and return every fish under the catch-and-release policy. Keep well clear of boats and other canal users too.
Grindley Brook is a useful access point, with postcode SY13 4QH and OS reference SJ 52368 42929. It’s near the Sandstone Trail car park and cafe, and no coded lock is required at the listed access. Facilities are mainly towpath and nearby parking rather than a stack of fishery extras, so bring what you need and settle in for a proper canal session.

How we'd fish Whitchurch Stretch
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
