We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- There are 33 pegs, although seasonal weed growth can knock a few out of action. So the fishable peg count can move about through the year.
- Access is from Watson Street, tucked behind the Tesco supermarket. Follow the route on to the public car park by the old pump house, then it’s a flat tarmac walkway down to the river.
- That walkway is bob on for fishing trolleys, which saves a fair bit of faff with the kit. Driving behind the pegs is only allowed for matches.
- The river averages roughly 3 to 5 feet deep and the section is about 50 yards wide. A decent all-round bit of water rather than a tiny, tight channel.
- Peg 1 starts near the Leicester Line railway bridge. Pegs 1 to 4 are the punchier swims, with fast, shallow water around 3 to 4 feet deep.
- Those first pegs are described as holding chub, dace and barbel. They look the place for keeping a bait moving and working the quicker water.
- Pegs 5 to 9 settle into slightly deeper, smoother water. That change in pace should give you a few different lines to pick apart as the day goes on.
- Pegs 9 to 13 are noted as bream swims, while the other pegs produce roach, dace and chub. There’s a nice spread of options across the section.
- Fishing is normally dawn till dusk. The river close season runs from 15 March to 16 June, with no fishing of any type allowed during that spell.
Methods: The varied pace suits a mix of trotting and feeder work, with the fast shallows worth a look for chub, dace and barbel and the smoother, deeper pegs offering a good bream approach. Stick to the permanently pegged swims where applicable and cover the water properly rather than faffing about.
