The full rundown on Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal – Wolverhampton Stretch

This is proper canal fishing rather than a neat little lake complex, with Wolverhampton Angling Association controlling a long run of Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal water. The Wolverhampton stretch runs from Otherton Marina towards the A5 near Gailey, giving you plenty of towpath to explore and different-looking pegs to weigh up. It’s the sort of venue where picking the right bit on the day matters more than hunting a famous named swim.

There are extra association stretches around Four Ashes, Pendeford, Penkridge, Brewood and Wombourne too. The Wombourne section runs between Dimmingsdale Lock and Botterham Lock. That gives visiting anglers a few areas to consider, but check the exact local water details before setting off. Canal access can vary, and a quick word with a bailiff is always a good shout if you’re unsure where a permit applies.

The fishing is mixed coarse, with reported roach, bream, chub, carp, gudgeon and perch. Pike are also reported on some nearby Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal sections. That mix means you can keep things nicely flexible: a float set-up for working the water, a feeder approach when you want to search a bit further out, or a careful look at the margins for signs of fish. Start simple, watch the water and let the swim tell you what to do.

As with most canal sessions, parking depends on the section and isn’t guaranteed at every peg. Towpath access is generally available, but surfaces vary, so sensible footwear and a bit of kit-carrying planning will save a proper faff. There are no toilets provided along the towpath. No lake acreage is published because this is canal fishing, and no fixed opening hours are published for the stretches either.

A one-day permit costs £2.50. Day permits are available from selected tackle shops and bailiffs, with the Bridge Inn and Caravan Park in Brewood listed as outlets. Bailiffs at Penkridge, Four Ashes and Wombourne may also be able to help. Annual membership is £20 for adults, £15 for OAP anglers and £15 for disabled anglers, while children under 16 fish free under the association permit information. You’ll also need an Environment Agency rod licence, so get both bits sorted before you settle into a peg.

Do pay attention to the bait rules, as they’re important here. Bloodworm and joker, pellets, boilies and livebaiting are not permitted on Wolverhampton AA waters. Night fishing isn’t advertised as available, and the canal is used for both match and pleasure fishing. Take a tidy tackle load, a landing net, unhooking kit and a couple of approaches rather than every bit of gear in the shed. Find a comfortable swim, keep your eyes open and work out what’s happening in front of you — bob on canal angling when it clicks.
