The lowdown

The Union Canal at Linlithgow is a proper bit of West Lothian water, and it’s a canal fishery rather than a tidy, standalone commercial venue. The local section includes Manse Road Basin, home of the Linlithgow Canal Centre, so there’s plenty going on around the water. It’s the sort of place where a bit of planning before chucking in can save a fair faff on the bank.

The full rundown on Union Canal

The Union Canal at Linlithgow is a proper bit of West Lothian water, and it’s a canal fishery rather than a tidy, standalone commercial venue. The local section includes Manse Road Basin, home of the Linlithgow Canal Centre, so there’s plenty going on around the water. It’s the sort of place where a bit of planning before chucking in can save a fair faff on the bank.

There’s cracking history here, too. The canal opened for traffic in 1822 and follows roughly the 73-metre contour level. Hugh Baird designed it, with Thomas Telford involved in the engineering, and the main level is generally lock-free. The full canal runs for approximately 31 miles, while the original route was about 32 miles. Proper old-school canal country, then.

Around Linlithgow, the Avon Aqueduct is one of the big landmarks, stretching for approximately 810 feet. Manse Road Basin gives you another obvious point of interest, although the canal is also used by boats, walkers and cyclists. That means a quiet-looking swim might not stay quiet all session. Keep your kit tidy, leave room on the towpath and be prepared to move if the traffic makes things awkward.

Reported fish include pike, perch, roach, brown trout and leather carp. There’s no current fishery-specific stocking information, so it’s best not to arrive expecting a guaranteed head of lumps or a neat stock list for every peg. A sensible first session would be about finding out what the stretch is doing on the day rather than forcing one big plan.

Take a compact, flexible approach. A float setup gives you a chance of roach and perch while you learn the water, and checking the margins, cover and any depth changes is always bob on on a canal. If pike are your target, lure or deadbait tactics may appeal, subject to the relevant rules and permissions. Leather carp are reported too, but treat one as a cheeky bonus rather than building the whole session around it. Bring enough kit to stay mobile, plus tackle for changing swims and passing activity.

The main job before travelling is sorting access. No verified day-ticket or season-ticket price, booking system, fishing hours, separate fishing season dates or night-fishing permission were published in the checked canal-centre information. Fishing permission and permit requirements weren’t published there either, so contact the relevant fishery or waterway rights-holder before setting off. The canal centre has a museum, tearoom and seasonal boat trips, but its listed 2026 visitor-centre weekend hours of 1:30pm to 4:30pm are not confirmed fishing hours. Get the permission side nailed down, ask what methods and stretches are currently okay, then you’re ready for a proper wander and a few casts.

We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
