The full rundown on Dudley No. 1 Canal
Dudley No. 1 Canal is a proper bit of West Midlands canal fishing rather than a tidy commercial lake complex. The water runs through Dudley and Brierley Hill, linking Tipton Junction with Delph Junction and connecting with the Stourbridge Canal at Delph Locks.
At around 4.6 miles long and with 12 locks, there’s plenty of water to explore. It forms part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, with towpaths and public access giving it that classic urban canal feel. The historic Dudley Tunnel and Delph Locks add a bit of character too.
The fish mix is cracking for a canal. Reported species include carp, roach, perch, bream, chub, tench, crucian carp and gudgeon. The Merry Hill Waterfront section is the headline area for carp, with reported fish around 10lb to 25lb. That’s proper canal lumps, not just a few jacks knocking about.
There’s also some quality silverfish and mixed-fish potential. Reported roach reach roughly 2lb, perch around 3lb, chub and tench around 4lb, bream around 5lb and crucians around 1lb. So whether you fancy working the margins, fishing bread and punchy baits, or setting up for a longer carp session, there’s a fair bit to go at.
The big thing here is sorting the ticket before you even think about clipping up. Fishing rights vary by section. Woodside Angling Association and HanKat Angling Society control reported stretches, while some other sections may fall under the Canal & River Trust Waterway Wanderers scheme. Check the exact peg or length with the relevant rights holder.
Most canal sections are generally fishable all year, and the usual 15 March to 15 June close season normally doesn’t apply to canals. That said, designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest can have extra restrictions. Night fishing is generally allowed on Waterway Wanderers stretches, but club rules still apply on club-controlled water.
This is a public towpath venue, so keep things tidy and considerate. No fishing in lock chambers or within 25 metres of lock approaches, water points or swing and lifting bridges. Offside-bank fishing is generally out unless signed, and rods mustn’t be left unattended. Get the permit sorted, pick a legal swim and you’re bob on.

How we'd fish Merry Hill Waterfront
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
