The full rundown on Sumners Ponds

Sumners Ponds is a cracking West Sussex fishery with five coarse waters, so there’s a fair bit to get your teeth into. It ranges from the beginner-friendly Farm Pond through to proper specimen carp lakes, where fish are reported to around 35–45lb. Whether you’re after a relaxed session, a mixed bag or a serious crack at a lump, there’s a water aimed at it.

Farm Pond is the gentle starting point. It holds carp, crucians, bream, tench and other coarse fish, making it a handy option for newer anglers or anyone bringing the family along. Access is well thought out too, with a purpose-built accessible platform, a ramp and three priority swims. Bob on if easier access is important when choosing a peg.

Ribbon Lake gives you a bit more to pick apart. It’s an approximately 2-acre meandering water with islands and fishing platforms, plus a proper mixed list of barbel, chub, tench, perch, bream, roach and crucians. It looks like the sort of place where watching the water and choosing the right feature could matter more than simply lobbing out and hoping.

Match Lake is the bigger mixed option at approximately 3.5 acres. It contains mirror and common carp, barbel, chub, crucians, tench, bream and roach, with barbel reported to about 10lb. A flexible approach makes sense here, especially if the fish aren’t showing what they fancy. Take a few options, keep things tidy and let the swim tell you what’s happening rather than getting locked into one plan.

Betty’s Lake is the dedicated specimen water and is intended for experienced anglers. At approximately 3.5 acres, it contains mirror and common carp reported to around 35–45lb, depending on the source and update date. Sumners Lake is the larger specimen water, with carp to about 35lb alongside perch, roach, pike and bream. Access is more restricted there, with fishing limited to members and lakeside accommodation or pitch holders, so get that sorted before travelling.

There’s decent kit on site for making a proper trip of it, including toilets, showers, parking, a shop with bait and fishing sundries, and a café serving drinks, snacks and meals. You can also stay in lakeside camping and touring pitches, pods, lodges, cabins, safari tents or shepherd’s huts. Before setting off, check the booking details, the swim arrangements and what’s available on your chosen lake. Pack suitable landing gear, a few bait options and your usual spares, then ask the fishery about current conditions and any lake-specific advice.
