Bewdley Hawkbatch — KDAA

Hawkbatch is KDAA’s members-only stretch on the River Severn at Bewdley, running above Dowles Brook and covering pegs 1–51. It’s a proper mixed fishery, with lively white water and steadier swims for barbel and silver fish.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • Hawkbatch sits above Dowles Brook, with access from the B4194/Dowles Road near the dip where the road crosses the brook.
  • There are 51 pegs in total, so plenty of river to explore once you’re through the gate and along the track beside Dowles Brook.
  • The fast white-water pegs come into their own in summer. They’re suited to barbel, chub and dace when the river is pushing through.
  • When the Severn drops and steadies off, the silver fish water gets more appealing. Roach and perch are among the named species.
  • The deeper, steadier water is the year-round barbel option. Worth keeping in mind when the quicker stuff is lively or awkward.
  • This is a members-only stretch, so there’s no day-ticket faff. You’ll need KDAA membership before fishing here.
  • A key is needed for the KDAA car park. Get one from Bewdley Tackle & Leisure, then use the left-hand gate for the car park.
  • The river is reached on foot by following the track beside Dowles Brook. Bob on, but make sure you’ve got the access key sorted first.
  • Tackle-wise, the facts point towards barbel, chub and dace approaches in the fast water, with silver-fish tactics for the steadier low river and deeper-water barbel fishing through the year.
  • No night fishing is allowed, and the stretch asks anglers to keep things tidy and considerate around other anglers, river users and neighbours.

Methods: Trotting or feeder work suits the mixed nature of the stretch, with the fast white water aimed at barbel, chub and dace in summer. In lower, steadier conditions, focus on silver fish or the deeper water for barbel.

  • No fires.
  • All litter must be removed.
  • Fish must not be removed.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
