Charlton & Cropthorne

Charlton & Cropthorne is a managed Birmingham Anglers Association stretch on the Warwickshire Avon in Worcestershire. It’s slower and deeper water, with 12 named sections and roach and bream the main draw.

Run by Birmingham Anglers Association Limited · checked 9 Oct 2026

The lowdown

  • This is proper club-river fishing, run by Birmingham Anglers Association, which has been looking after waters since 1883.
  • Charlton covers sections 1–3, while Cropthorne runs through sections 4–12. So there’s a fair bit of numbered water to get your head round.
  • BAA describes the Avon here as slower and deeper. That points towards steady swims rather than a frantic, shallow chuck-and-chance-it job.
  • Roach and bream are the main species named for the stretch. Below Charlton Weir, chub and barbel can also be found, adding a bit of extra interest.
  • Swimfeeder is the tactic BAA recommends. Keep it tidy, find the depth, and work the crease or any steadier line where food can settle.
  • The natural banks and multiple numbered sections give the venue a managed but still pleasantly river-ish feel. Pick a swim that gives you a comfortable line into the flow.
  • Charlton access is listed at WR10 3LQ. Cropthorne access includes WR10 3LA on Sidings Lane, plus another point at WR10 2QA.
  • There are car parks at several access points, which takes some of the faff out of getting tackle in. The BAA handbook has the fuller maps, routes and parking details.
  • If using Sidings Lane, you’ll deal with a railway level crossing. Obey the signs, use the signaller telephone and leave the gates closed. No night fishing is allowed on this stretch.

Methods: BAA says swimfeeder is the best tactic here, making a steady feeder approach the obvious starting point. Build the swim carefully for roach and bream, while keeping an eye out for chub and barbel below Charlton Weir.
