35%Thornton Reservoir
Markfield · 1 lakes on site
Thornton is a 76-acre reservoir near Markfield with a proper fly-fishing history, but the village website lists the fishery as closed and a return to fishing isn't confirmed. Public walks, free parking and the coffee kiosk are a separate matter — don't mistake visitor access for permission to wet a line.
Chew Valley Lake
Bristol · 1 lakes on site
Chew Valley Lake is proper big-water fishing: approximately 1,200 acres with rainbow trout, brown trout and pike. There’s bank and boat trout fishing, while deadbait and lure pike sessions run on specific published dates.
Stratford-upon-Avon Canal
Lapworth · 5 lakes on site
PERLS Angling Club’s Lapworth Section C offers season-ticket canal fishing, match stretches and the separate Lapworth Top Pound. It’s £25 for the season ticket, but buy ahead and check your pegs carefully — day tickets have gone and some lengths are restricted.
Worksop
Chesterfield Canal
Chesterfield Canal
Worksop · 5 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing through Worksop, with roach, carp and crucians listed, plus reports of bonus bream and chub in the Shireoaks pounds. The big thing to get bob on is your permit: central Worksop and the neighbouring lengths aren’t all under the same operator.
Blithfield Reservoir
Rugeley · 2 lakes on site
Blithfield is a proper big-water trout venue near Abbots Bromley, with bank fishing, powered boats and two connected lake sections. Blithfield Anglers confirms it will remain open until its announced closure on 30 November 2026.
67%Bridgwater and Taunton Canal
Taunton · 1 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing across approximately six miles of Taunton Angling Association water, with roach, rudd and a mixed supporting cast. This guide covers Firepool Lock to Upper Maunsel Lock—not the separately managed Bridgwater section.
Colchester
Ardleigh Reservoir
Ardleigh Reservoir
Colchester · 2 lakes on site
Ardleigh is proper big-water fishing near Colchester: 120 acres with carp exceeding 40lb, pike exceeding 25lb and mixed match-fishing species. Associated Wick Lane Lake offers a smaller, day-only option with carp exceeding 30lb.
Ashbourne
Carsington Water
Carsington Water
Ashbourne · 1 lakes on site
Carsington Water is a 740-acre Derbyshire reservoir with a history of boat fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout. The former operator ceased trading on 1 December 2025, and fishing reopening was not verified as of 3 October 2026 — check that first, before planning a day afloat.
Melbourne
Foremark Reservoir
Foremark Reservoir
Melbourne · 1 lakes on site
Foremark is a proper big reservoir at approximately 230 acres, with a trout-fishing background and public facilities on site. Fishing now needs separate BMAA approval, though the club says its Foremark places are full — so this isn’t a turn-up-and-buy-a-ticket job.
69%Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal
Brecon · 1 lakes on site
A proper canal option for mixed coarse fishing, with MTAA controlling the stretch from Brecon theatre basin to Bridge 153 at Pencelli. Canal-only membership is £20 for 12 months, but guest tickets need a full MTAA member to host you.
75%Grand Western Canal
Tiverton · 1 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing from Tiverton towards the Somerset border, with summer tench, winter pike and town-end carp to get you thinking. Tiverton and District Angling Club controls the fishing, with online tickets and daylight-only sessions.
61%Bridgewater Canal
Sale · 1 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing through Sale, with roach, perch and bream at the heart of the Bridgewater’s mixed-species appeal. It’s Warrington Anglers Association members-only water, so sort your membership rather than turning up expecting a day ticket.
Oxford
Farmoor Reservoir
Farmoor Reservoir
Oxford · 2 lakes on site
Farmoor is a proper big-water trout venue near Oxford, with two reservoirs covering approximately 400 acres and fishing from bank or boat. Farmoor 1 is catch-and-release, while Farmoor 2 gives you the choice of returning your trout or taking fish home on the right ticket.
70%Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Northampton · 1 lakes on site
Ravensthorpe is a proper big-water carp prospect: a 114-acre Victorian reservoir with advertised carp exceeding 40 lb. It’s syndicate fishing rather than a cheeky day ticket, with year-round bank fishing and 24-hour access for members.
73%Pitsford Water
Northampton · 1 lakes on site
Pitsford Water offers bank and boat fly fishing for rainbow and brown trout, plus seasonal pike and perch fishing. There’s a proper choice of permits and boat options, but predator methods have separate calendars worth checking before you book.
Pontypool
Llandegfedd Reservoir
Llandegfedd Reservoir
Pontypool · 1 lakes on site
Llandegfedd is a proper big-water option near Pontypool: around 434 acres with bank and boat fishing, stocked rainbows, wild browns and a varied coarse lineup. Pike fishing has its own sessions and rules, so pick your permit before loading the car.
Market Rasen
Toft Newton Reservoir
Toft Newton Reservoir
Market Rasen · 1 lakes on site
Toft Newton is a roughly 40-acre trout reservoir near Market Rasen, with bank fishing, boats and stocked rainbows and browns. There’s a handy spread of facilities too, but give them a bell for current tickets, hours and boat arrangements.
70%Lancaster Canal
Preston · 2 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing with a cracking mix of coarse fish and pike: PAC's water runs from Preston's southern end to Hatlex Bridge 118 at Hest Bank, with the Glasson Branch included. Sort your ticket before heading down — there's no buying one on the bank.
65%Leeds and Liverpool Canal
Burnley · 1 lakes on site
A proper canal option with £4 day tickets, silver-fish fishing and a chance to target predators. Pendle & Burnley District Angling Association controls the stretch from the Anchor Inn at Salterforth to the motorway bridge at Hapton—not just the Burnley Mile.
71%Tring Reservoirs
Tring · 4 lakes on site
Four reservoirs, two very different ways to fish: coarse angling on Wilstone, Startops End and Marsworth, plus separately booked trout fishing at Tringford. Big heads-up: Wilstone is listed as closed for major repairs from 1 May 2025, so check before travelling.
77%Draycote Water
Rugby · 1 lakes on site
Draycote Water is a proper big-water venue near Rugby, with roughly 590 acres for bank and boat fly fishing. There’s boat-only predator fishing too, but the dates and permitted methods need a careful look before you book.
71%Trent and Mersey Canal
Stone · 1 lakes on site
A proper club-controlled canal stretch through Stone, with 2.6 miles of mixed fishing and canal-only membership advertised at £15. Roach shoals, bream and perch lead the line-up, with carp, occasional large chub and club-reported pike to 20 lb adding interest.
66%Macclesfield Canal
Macclesfield · 1 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing on Prince Albert Angling Society’s bridges 37–61 stretch, with mixed silvers, plentiful perch and skimmers, plus the odd double-figure carp. Fools Nook at bridge 49 is an access point, not the whole venue.
69%Basingstoke Canal
Woking · 1 lakes on site
Proper canal fishing through Woking, with mixed coarse species and £5 adult day permits. It’s towpath-only, catch-and-release fishing, and the Town Wharf access reference isn’t permission to drop a line there.

Finding somewhere to fish near you
Type a town, county or fish into the box up top — something like “Nottingham”, “carp Nottinghamshire” or “day ticket River Trent” — and we'll pull up the waters we've checked nearest that spot. Around Nottingham, for example, you'll find canal stretches, the tidal-free middle Trent and plenty of commercial lakes within a short drive.
Every listing tells you the stuff you actually need before you load the car: what's in each lake or stretch, whether it's a day ticket, club or syndicate water, the house rules and what a ticket costs when we last checked. Rules and prices change, so always give the fishery or club a quick shout before you go.
Rivers, canals and stillwaters fish completely differently. Lakes reward a bit of watercraft and steady feeding; rivers are all about flow, depth and level, so we show live river levels where we can. Use the water-type and fish filters to narrow it down, then open a venue for the lake-by-lake or stretch-by-stretch lowdown.
