Tring Reservoirs

Four reservoirs, two very different ways to fish: coarse angling on Wilstone, Startops End and Marsworth, plus separately booked trout fishing at Tringford. Big heads-up: Wilstone is listed as closed for major repairs from 1 May 2025, so check before travelling.

“7.1/10 — The coarse species mix and separate trout option offer plenty of appeal, but Wilstone’s listed closure limits the current choice.”

The full rundown on Tring Reservoirs

Tring Reservoirs isn’t one water with one ticket and one set of rules. This Hertfordshire complex brings together Wilstone, Startops End, Marsworth and Tringford, with the first three forming the coarse-fishing side and Tringford running separately as a trout fishery. Get that split straight before packing the car and you’ll save yourself a proper bit of faff. The fishery address uses HP23 4LH, while the supplied map coordinates point specifically to Tringford, rather than the whole complex.

There’s a fair spread of water here. Wilstone is approximately 119 acres, Startops End around 26 acres and Marsworth around 24 acres. Tringford’s operator gives its size as 26 acres at full capacity. The big catch at present is access to Wilstone: the operator lists it as closed for major repairs from 1 May 2025. Don’t build a trip around that big-water session without checking its position first. Its size is tempting, but the closure needs to lead the planning.

Across the coarse reservoirs, the listed species are carp, bream, tench, pike, catfish, roach and perch. That gives the complex plenty of appeal, whether your thing is carp, a mixed coarse session or seasonal pike fishing. Those species are listed for the coarse waters collectively, though, rather than as a separate stocking breakdown for each reservoir. There’s no need to dress it up with promises of lumps or guaranteed action: the variety and choice of waters are the useful bits here.

For a straightforward daytime trip, coarse day tickets are advertised year-round, subject to closures, and fishing runs dawn to dusk. Marsworth and Startops permits can be bought online or on the bank. Adult tickets cover up to two rods, with a senior concession and a single-rod option also listed. Want to stay after dark? That’s a different arrangement: you need reservoir membership covering your chosen water. Memberships run from 1 April to 31 March and include other Tring Anglers waters.

A few rules really shape the approach. Leave the lures and bait boat at home for the coarse reservoirs, and don’t plan on pre-baiting a peg. Pike livebaiting and deadbaiting are restricted to 1 October–31 March, so match the method to the calendar. Suitable landing nets and unhooking mats are required, with coarse fish returned unharmed. Keepnets need club-match or committee permission. Sort those basics before choosing your kit and you’ll avoid an awkward rethink on the bank.

Tringford is the separate option for fly anglers, offering designated bank areas and rowing boats. Its 2026 day ticket includes boat hire and a six-fish catch limit, but that isn’t permission to take six trout home: one rainbow may be kept and all brown trout must go back. Telephone booking is required in advance. Its published 2026 season starts on 1 April and ends in November, with the final closing date still unconfirmed. A different setup, then, and worth planning as its own trip.
