The lowdown
The Grand Western Canal is a proper change of pace from a lake complex. This country park waterway runs for 11¼ miles, or 18 km, from Tiverton Canal Basin to Lowdwells near the Somerset border. Tiverton and District Angling Club leases the angling rights. Think canal fishing along a shared waterway, rather than a collection of pools with a separate ticket for each one.

The full rundown on Grand Western Canal
The Grand Western Canal is a proper change of pace from a lake complex. This country park waterway runs for 11¼ miles, or 18 km, from Tiverton Canal Basin to Lowdwells near the Somerset border. Tiverton and District Angling Club leases the angling rights. Think canal fishing along a shared waterway, rather than a collection of pools with a separate ticket for each one.
There’s a cracking spread of species: tench, roach, rudd, bream, pike, carp and perch. The club particularly highlights the summer tench fishing, so that’s a clear seasonal starting point if you fancy a tench session. It also reports perch exceeding 2 lb. That gives you something else to think about beyond the carp, without pretending every swim holds a lump or every trip ends with a PB.
Winter brings pike into the picture, with deadbait, lure and fly fishing all highlighted by the club. At the town end, the club reports common and mirror carp exceeding 20 lb. Those are claims worth knowing when deciding what sort of session you fancy. They aren’t a reason to treat the whole canal as a specimen carp venue, though: the mixed-species fishing is a big part of its appeal.
Sorting your permission is an online job. From 1 January 2026, memberships and day tickets are exclusively available through Clubmate. Adult and concessionary day tickets are available, while full-season permits have adult, concessionary and junior options. The season runs from 1 January to 31 December. Junior day tickets and free under-10 club permits aren’t offered, so check the junior arrangements before planning a youngster’s trip. An Environment Agency rod licence is needed where applicable, too.
There’s no closed fishing season, but sessions are strictly daylight-only. Keep that distinction in mind: year-round fishing doesn’t mean overnight fishing. The towpath is shared, so withdraw poles for passing boats and keep tackle clear of other users. The horse-drawn barge adds another thing to watch for; move clear of both the horse and its towing rope. A tidy setup matters here, with other people using the same strip of bank.
For the main visitor entrance, head for Canal Hill, Tiverton, EX16 4HX. The Canal Basin has public toilets and nearby tea rooms, while accessible angling platforms are provided at various locations along the canal. Basin parking is charged separately from fishing. Its car park opens round the clock, but that still doesn’t allow a cheeky night session. Keep your permit handy for club bailiffs or Canal Rangers, take your litter home and leave the banks undug.

- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
