The full rundown on Bude Canal

Bude Canal Angling Association runs the fishery around Bude, Cornwall, with the Main Canal stretching from the Sea Lock to the A39 Road Bridge. That main day-ticket length is approximately 1.5 miles, so there is plenty of towpath to explore rather than just one tight little pond.

It is a canal venue, so expect a proper bit of watercraft. Work the margins, look for cover and keep your eyes open for changes in depth and features. The level towpath should make moving between swims fairly straightforward, although the towpath must stay clear at all times.

The reported mix is nicely varied. Carp, bream, roach, dace and perch are on the list, while stocking records include roach, rudd, tench, bream and crucian carp. Gudgeon and larger carp have also been reported, giving you a few different ways to build a session.

The Main Canal is currently open for day-ticket angling, with online booking and local sales at Crescent Post Office or Bude Bait & Tackle on the Wharf. Adult day tickets are £7 a rod, which is cracking value for a venue with around 1.5 miles of canal to learn.

Night fishing is permitted on the Main Canal under the current ticket information. Bivvies are allowed only after sunset and must be packed away by 8am, so this is overnight fishing rather than a free-for-all camp. Two rods are the maximum, and night tickets cover up to two rods.

There are a few important canal rules to keep in mind. Lure fishing is prohibited from 1 April through 30 September, bait boats and drones are banned, and you need barbless or micro-barbed hooks. Keep the landing net and disgorgers handy, fish from your own peg and return every fish alive.

The association also controls the Middle Pound, Navigation and River section, Hele Bridge Stock Pond and Whalesborough Lake. Hele Bridge Stock Pond and Whalesborough Lake are members-only, while no separate general opening-season calendar is published; fishing is described through the ticket's daylight and night-time periods.
