The full rundown on Chigborough Fisheries

Chigborough Farm & Fisheries sits near Maldon and Heybridge in Essex, at Chigborough Farm, Chigborough Road, Maldon, CM9 4RE. The wider complex covers about 130 acres, with around 30 acres of coarse and carp lakes and another 30 acres of fly-fishing water.

For coarse and carp anglers, the headline waters are May Water, Heybridge Mere and Scraley Mere. May Water is the main carp lake, with carp reported to 44 lb. Heybridge Mere is advertised with carp to 30 lb, while Scraley Mere holds carp reported to 33 lb. Proper lumps, then.

The mix isn’t just carp. The coarse and carp waters also contain catfish, perch, tench, bream, roach, rudd and pike. Heybridge North contains crucian carp too, so there’s a decent spread of targets depending on what sort of session you fancy.

The fly side has two named lakes: Home Water and Rook Hall. Both are stocked monthly during the trout season, with trout sourced from Norfolk. The annual trout season runs from November 1 through the end of June. Home Water is closed for fly fishing from July through October, while Rook Hall is open year-round except August.

Home Water also has advertised big-game angling from April 1 to October 31. That gives the venue a useful seasonal twist, although the current official pages don’t publish a general night-fishing tariff or clearly confirm overnight night fishing. Best not to assume you can settle in for a nocturnal campaign.

Tickets need booking in advance through the website or Swimbooker, and anglers can start at their allotted time after booking online. Coarse and carp fishing starts from £15 per day, while fly fishing starts from £30 per day. Bailiffs check bookings during the day, including by quad bike.

The rules are sensible but worth clocking before you turn up. Maximum three rods are allowed, carp anglers need at least 15 lb non-braided mainline, and large clean nets, mats and slings are required. No fires, no keep-nets, and no moving fish. Toilets, a shower for longer stays, a portaloo and the Black Pig Farm Cafe add a bit of comfort around the fishing.
