The full rundown on Grand Union Canal – Watford Stretch

The Watford Piscators stretch covers roughly six miles of the Grand Union Canal between Watford and Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire. It’s a chain of canal pounds rather than one big lake, with Evans, Park, Dickinsons, Croxley Moor and Gingers all included. So there’s plenty of water to get your head around, and each section has its own sort of appeal.

Park and Evans are the club’s standout canal-fishing sections. The wider fish list is a decent one too, including bream, carp, chub, perch, pike, roach, rudd and tench. That gives you loads of ways to attack it, whether you fancy a float session for bites, a bream approach or sitting it out for something with a bit more shoulder.

Evans Pound is the private members-only option and has a proper bit of character, with the River Gade flowing into and out of it. That creates near-constant flow, so it’s not just a case of treating it like a stillwater. Evans is described as a year-round venue that rarely freezes, with bream to about 5lb, chub to about 5lb, large carp and occasional barbel to about 8lb. Club bookings are available Monday to Friday, subject to contacting the secretary for the details and prices.

Park Pound is a good all-rounder, holding bream, chub, large carp, specimen perch and match fish. Day tickets are available from bailiffs on the bank, so it’s worth checking the permit position before you lug all the gear down. Dickinsons is more geared towards roach and smaller fish, but occasional carp, crucian carp, bream and perch can turn up with a cheeky surprise. It could suit a busy float session where you keep the swim ticking over.

Croxley Moor is the headline bream section, with large shoals typically around 2lb 8oz and fish reported to about 6lb. There are also large carp reportedly over 30lb and roach over 1lb, so you’ll want to be ready for a proper change of pace. Day tickets are available from bailiffs on the bank at Croxley Moor, Dickinsons and Park, while Gingers is also covered by the adult day-ticket arrangement. Access points include Cassiobury Park, Rousebarn Lane, Gade Avenue and the former Croxley Green station car park.

For a first session, keep the approach flexible. Take float gear for roach and smaller fish, plus stronger tackle if carp or bigger bream are the target. Have a chat with the bailiff about the best areas, current conditions, bait and whether any local restrictions apply. Individual pound sizes aren’t published, so a little homework before setting off will save a fair bit of faff. The canal sections are open all year, but carry your current membership record and rod licence, use a suitable landing net and unhooking mat, and leave every swim spotless. Night-fishing permission isn’t specifically stated, so check before planning anything after dark.
