The full rundown on Lathom Fisheries
Lathom Fisheries in Burscough has four coarse lakes, so there’s a fair bit going on in one venue. You’ve got match waters, dedicated F1 sport and a larger-carp option, which is handy if you fancy changing gears without a load of faff. There’s also a large car park, toilet block and disabled facilities, keeping the practical side nice and bob on.
Lake 1 is one of the two match lakes and has a proper mixed line-up. Carp go to about 20 lb, with barbel to roughly 8 lb and chub to around 5 lb. Perch, roach, rudd, tench, bream and ide/orf are in there too, so it’s not just a case of sitting behind one carp rod. A good shout if you like having plenty of options in the swim.
Lake 2 is the one for anglers chasing a proper lump. It’s mainly a large-carp lake, with carp to about 32 lb — the biggest published carp in the fishery. Chub, bream, barbel and tench are also present, but the big carp are clearly the main draw. If that’s your plan, have a natter with the bailiff before setting up and ask what approach is currently making sense.
Lake 3 has a large number of F1 carp to about 10 lb, making it the obvious pick for regular F1 action. Carp to around 20 lb are also present, along with chub, barbel, roach, ide and gudgeon. Lake 4 is the second match lake and also has a large head of F1 carp, with chub, small barbel, bream, tench and ide adding a bit of variety. Plenty there for a busy, varied session.
Day tickets are obtained from the bailiff during the day, with fishing generally from dawn until dusk. Night fishing is reported as available only when booked in advance, so get that sorted before turning up. For general enquiries, the number is the fishery; match bookings are with the fishery, and the email is lathomfisheries@gmail.com.
The rules need a proper read before you clip up. Barbless hooks are required, all nets must be dipped before setting up and when changing ponds, and a landing net must be used for every fish. Keepnets are for match anglers only. Groundbait, boilies and method feeders are prohibited, with loose feed only allowed, so leave the usual bait bucket and feeder faff at home.
There are a few more important bits too: dogs aren’t allowed, under-16s must fish with a responsible adult, alcohol is prohibited and meat bait is banned until further notice. Floating bread on hooks is also prohibited. Fish must not be removed, and litter must be taken home. Check the current rules with the bailiff before fishing, then choose your lake around the session you fancy — F1s, mixed coarse sport or a cheeky chance of a 32 lb carp.

How we'd fish Lake 1
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
barbel
Pellet and boilie for the lake barbel
Lake barbel feed hard and fight harder. Use a strong rod and line, and rest them properly in the net before release.
- Halibut pellet or small boilie over a bed of pellet.
- Strong hooklink and a size 10–12 hook.
- Never hold barbel out of water long — keep them in the net until they've recovered.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

Lake 1
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.

- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
