The full rundown on Bawburgh Lakes

Bawburgh Fisheries sits on New Road at Bawburgh, near Norwich, Norfolk. It’s a mature gravel-pit complex with seven lakes, plus approximately 1.5 miles of the River Yare. That’s a proper spread of water, with enough variety to keep things interesting whether you’re after a big old pit fish, a bend in the river or a quieter session on one of the smaller lakes.

The three large specimen waters are Bawburgh, Colney and Lodge Farm Lake. Lodge Farm is the biggest, covering just under 30 acres, while Colney is approximately 25 acres. Bawburgh has a main bowl, three back bays and a large island, so there are plenty of features to study before getting the rods out. On a new venue like this, a bit of time with the plumbing rod, marker float or just a good look from the bank could save you a fair bit of faff later.

Lodge Farm holds specimen carp, tench, pike and bream, with the official site listing carp to 43lb 12oz, tench to 12lb 7oz, bream to 18lb 15oz and pike to 33lb 8oz. Colney is noted for large tench, carp, bream, roach, eels, pike and perch. Bawburgh also has tench, carp, pike, silver fish and bream. So there’s a cracking mix here, from proper lumps to more all-round fishing.

The four smaller waters — Lenny’s, Works, Seamons and Finger Pool — contain carp, tench, roach, rudd, perch and pike in varying quantities. Finger Pool is less than one acre and Seamons is approximately one acre, giving anglers some more compact options alongside the big pits. The River Yare adds another string to the bow, with chub, roach and dace particularly noted. If you’re planning a first session, it’s worth asking the fishery which water best suits your target species and the sort of fishing you enjoy.

This isn’t a day-ticket venue. Permits run from 1 April 2026, and the fishery is syndicate-only for the 2026/27 season. The £400 full ticket covers Bawburgh, Colney, Lodge Farm, the four smaller lakes and the 1.5 miles of River Yare. The £200 small-lakes ticket covers Lenny’s, Works, Seamons, Finger Pool and the river. Membership applications are made by email or telephone, so get the details squared away before loading the barrow.

There’s a tidy list of rules to know before setting off. A current Environment Agency rod licence is required, all fish must be returned alive, and fish cannot be moved between lakes. Three rods are allowed on the big lakes and two on the smaller waters, with rods kept no more than two metres apart and attended at all times. Padded unhooking mats are required for large fish, fixed-lead rigs need a safe lead-release system, and bait boats may deliver feed only. Pike fishing runs from 1 October to 14 March, needs the fishery’s pike talk and suitable tackle, and night pike fishing isn’t allowed. Take time to check the current rules and ask about any local preferences before you clip up — nice and simple.
