River Ouse – Acaster

Acaster is YDAA’s members-only stretch on the tidal Ouse, with right-bank fishing from Naburn Weir to the Old Salmon Hut. There’s feeder sport for roach and skimmers, plus specimen chub and barbel in the weir pool — but keep a proper eye on those fast-rising levels.

Run by York & District Amalgamation of Anglers · checked 5 Oct 2026 · boundaries only partly described by the club

The lowdown

  • The main fishing runs along the right bank from Naburn Weir to the Old Salmon Hut. Those are your named boundaries, so get them straight before settling into a swim for the day.
  • There are three additional sections too, marked with yellow-tipped posts. Look out for those markers rather than assuming every bit of bank is included — a little checking saves a lot of faff.
  • This is tidal water, and levels can rise very quickly. That’s the big thing to keep in mind here: stay alert to what the river is doing while you’re fishing.
  • The weir pool is the standout named feature for specimen chub and barbel. If those are your target fish, that’s the bit to have in mind, rather than treating the whole length as identical.
  • For a feeder session, YDAA suggests maggot or caster for roach and skimmer bream. A straightforward approach to start with, and a useful steer if you’re wondering what bait to bring.
  • Carp are named here alongside roach, bream, chub and barbel. There are occasional salmon sightings too, although that’s a passing river detail rather than a reason to plan a salmon session.
  • Come in via Intake Lane or Mill Lane, then follow the track downstream past the slipway and moorings. Parking is just inside the access gate, so that’s your starting point for sorting the kit.
  • Riverside driving is allowed at your own risk after the grass has been cut, usually by late July. Don’t take that date as an automatic green light — the cutting is the important bit.
  • Keep the practical side simple: there are no fishing platforms, and no disabled access or toilets are listed. It’s members-only with no day tickets, and night fishing is prohibited, so plan a daytime outing.

Methods: Feeder fishing with maggot or caster is the suggested approach for roach and skimmer bream. For bigger-fish plans, the weir pool is specifically noted for specimen chub and barbel.

  • Night fishing is prohibited.
  • An appropriate EA rod licence is required separately.
  • Riverside driving is only permitted after grass cutting and is at anglers’ own risk.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
