The lowdown

  • First, get your bearings: the fishing runs from below the boat moorings to the beck beside the sewage works, opposite Archbishop’s Palace. Those are the limits to keep in mind when choosing your swim.
  • Pumper, Captains Key and Palace Ings are the named sections, with the bypass bridge dividing the fishery. Handy landmarks for sorting which bit you’re heading for before you unload the tackle.
  • The useful bream pointer is the inner shelf. Higher water can bring them onto it, so don’t overlook that feature when the river’s up. That’s a proper stretch-specific clue for planning your session.
  • Winter matches are popular here. If you’re lining up a day-ticket trip, check the match calendar before booking rather than assuming your chosen section will be available when you turn up.
  • Summer brings potentially busy boat traffic. Worth keeping that in mind when picking the season for your trip: this isn’t somewhere to bank on having the river entirely to yourself.
  • For Pumper, park at Love Lane and leave no valuables behind. For the lower section, the listed approach is different: Naburn Lane verge parking, followed by the stone track down towards the fishing.
  • The lower-section walk is approximately five minutes and suits trolleys, which saves a bit of carrying faff. Fishing platforms are listed too, but disabled access is limited; don’t confuse platforms with easy access throughout.
  • Keep the boundaries and exclusions straight: the house-front jetty is out of bounds for fishing. The village-green length is outside YDAA control and cannot be used for matches.

Methods: For a bream session, keep the inner shelf in mind when the water is higher. Plan around potentially busy summer boat traffic, and check match availability before settling on your day.
