River Ouse – Naburn Below Lock
A tidal bit of the Ouse below Naburn Lock, managed jointly by York & District Amalgamation of Anglers and Naburn Caravan Park. There’s day-ticket fishing here, with feeder work for roach and skimmers on the cards — but keep a proper eye on those rapidly changing levels.

The lowdown
- The stretch starts at the downstream end of the lock mouth and finishes at the end of the caravan-park field. Those are your boundaries — don’t treat the ticket as a pass for everywhere around Naburn.
- This is tidal water, and levels can change rapidly. That’s the big thing to keep in mind while settling into a swim: keep watching the water rather than getting completely wrapped up in the fishing.
- Fancy a straightforward coarse approach? The venue suggests feeder fishing with maggot or caster for roach and skimmers. That gives you a useful starting point without needing to overcomplicate the bait bag.
- Roach, skimmer bream, chub, barbel and salmon are all named for Naburn. A cracking mix, though that’s a guide to what’s named here, not a promise of what’ll be on the munch.
- The coarse season doesn’t start before 16 June. There’s also a separate game-only restriction downstream of the falls through 30 June, so check your intended swim before booking — the dates need a proper look.
- Game fishing has its own ticket and a stated season of 6 April–31 October inclusive. Game anglers also need a valid EA game licence; don’t muddle the fishing permit with the licence.
- Sort your ticket before you fish. Online booking is available for up to five consecutive days, and the caravan-site shop is another option when open. Keep your online ticket ready on your phone or printed out.
- Access through the caravan park involves a private road, with the correct permit needed for non-residents. Stick to recognised paths and the riverbank, and remember this is daytime fishing only — no cheeky overnight session.
Methods: Feeder fishing with maggot or caster is the suggested approach for roach and skimmers. Keep an eye on the rapidly changing tidal level throughout your session.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
